PAHIATUA NEWS.

(From Our A Resident Reporter). Tuesday. PROPOSED AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL ASSOCIATION. AN ENTHUSIASTIC MEETING. A meeting of the proposed Agricultural and Pastorsl Association was held to-night, in the Commercial ! Hotel, Mr W. Tosswill presiding. There was a crowded attendance, including both settlers and townspeople. The matter was discussed very fully, and the Secretary reported that ll'i names had been signed agreeing to become members. There was also a big discussion as to whether the secretary should be seiit out to the back blocks to canvass-for support. It was decided to appoint a sub-committee, .consisting of Captain Whytp, Messrs J. C. Cooper, T. Boyd, and K. McLennan, to visit Pongaroa on next sale day, in about a fortnight's time, with power to arrange, and if necessary appoint sub-committeas in the various districts out baclc. It was also decided that copies of the agreement for intending members to sign be left with various mcruneers and livery stable proprietors. The question of the site for the-proposed showground was discussed, and a sub-committee was appointed to inspect suitable sites ?.nd obtain all informationn, and report at the next general meeting of the Association. The matter of holding a Ram Fair alter the Show was discussed. The secretary stated the present chairman (Mr Tosswill) had promised a donation of £lO if nine others did likewise. There was a good deal of enthusiasm anown at the meeting.

The Presbyterian Choir and some of the children belonging to the Sunday School are practising the "Service of Song" entitled "Nell," which they will render at an early date, for,the benefit of the Sunday School Renovation Fund. The Pahiatua District Band have \ been engaged, to play at the Fortymile Bush Athletic Sports, at Hamua, on St. Fatrick's Day. The Old Boys will hold a meeting at Boyen's Private Hotel this evening. A seven-aside tournament is to be held shortly. Four t°uders were to-day* received for the Pahiatua-Scarborough footpath, but up to the time of writing the successful'tenderer was not made known. Given fine weather to-morrow the athletic sports at Hamua, held under the auspices of trie Forty-mib Bush Athletic Society, should easily eclipse all previous meeting?. A uccessfu) meeting of the Scarborough Footpath Social Committee was held last evening at Scarborough, and final arrangements were made for the social on Thursday evening next. A good programme has been arranged, arid a-rjthe tickets are selling rapidly a crowded house is anticipated. The social evening in connection with the Methodist Sunday School anniversary will be held in the.Method-. ist Church to-morrow (Wednesday) evening. At the quarterly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce last evening, presided over by Mr W. Tosswill, nine new members were elected. Reference was made regarding j[the proposed A. and P. Association in Pahiatua, and a committee was formed to wait on the Hon. A. W. Hogg on his next visit to this district, and bring under his notice matters that are of urgent importance to this district. An interesting game of tennis -was played on the local court this afternoon, when the final for the trophy presented by Mrs Avery for the handicap ladies' singles was played. Miss Bolton (receive 3) and Miss L. K. Hughes (owe 8) were the contestants, 'and a good game Miss Bolton succeeded in winning by 5 points. Tlrere-is talk of asking the shopkeepers to close their business premises from the Thursday evening before Good Friday until the following Tuesday morning. If they so decide it Will be welcomed by the shop assistants, who will be able to have a good hoilday. A rink from the Pahiatua Bowling Club will journey to Palmerston North to-morrow to play the Palmerston North rink for the Dixon Cup. Games for the folt's trophy will also be held on the local green.
