MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
ORDINARY MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the Masterton Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last evening. There were present: —The Mayor f (Mr P. L. Hollirigs), and Crs J. Yarr, J. Prentice, J. C. Ewington, W. Morris. W. Pragnell, A. Haughey, J. Hunter and Jasi Elliott and J. Pauling. Mr C. 11. Owen waited on the Council in reference to rates, which he said had been charged to him and should have been sent to Mr Arnold, the owner. He wished to be freed 1 from the resp msibility of the rates. Cr Ewington moved that an application form be sent to the landlord to have his name placed on the roll. The Mayor refused to accept the resolution as he said it was unnecessary. After a good deal of discussion Mr Owen was informed that the Town Clerk would write to the owner, and if he would not pay, the > occupier would still be responsible. I An application for a carriage and drivers' license by C. Gurote was referred to the Works Committee. The St. Patrick's Day Sports Association wrote complaining that the public baths had been let free to the School Carnival pn the same day as their sports were being held. They thought this unfair competition. The Mayor explained the difficulty had been overcome by having the carnival'postponed until next day. ' Mr Russell waited on the Council asked when Cockburn street was to be put in order. He" was informed that the street would receive attention in due course. The Public Trustee was appointed Sinking Fund Commissioner for all Borough loans. The Borough Solicitor was instructed to prepare a special order in connection with Mr Peters' lease of portion of the waterworks reserve. Mr C. A. Pownall, Borough Solicitor, wrote informing the Council of the Compensation Court's decision in regard to the Council's claims for betterment in Dixon and Cross streets. Mr Pownall made certain recommendations to the Council as to ,the collection of the amounts due, and with reference to further claims. It was decided to authorise Mr Pownall to carry out his recommendations.
