The milk supply at' the Ballance Butter Factory, and the Tararua Cheese Factory, is keeping up remarkably well this season. At the former factory about 1,800 gallons of rr.ilk are delivered daily with an average test of 4.1 and 23 boxes of butter are manufactured daily. The supply to the cheese factory 33 about 700 gallons daily from 14 suppliers, the average test being 4.0. So far this season 300 cases of cheese have been made, and I understand that Is per lb of butter fat will to the end ot the season. Last month about £SOO was paid out to the suppliers, the largest cheque being £9O. An effort is being macie to from a hockey club in Pahiatua this season, and a meeting will be held at an early date for this purpose. Mr Frank Shaw had a miraculous escape from death to-day. He was driving a waggon along the road between Pongaroa and Pahiatua, when the horses shied and the vehicle went over a steep hill. The waggon rolled over Mr Shaw, who was severely injured. I understand that Mr H. Russell, of Hamua, has been appointed huntsman to the Woodlands Hunt Club for this season, and that the first run of the season will be held aboutlthe middle of April. ~ Mr S. Girdwood, of the Commercial and Ranfurly Stables, has added two rubber tyred gigs to his stock of vehicles for hiring purposes. Mr A. H. Dallaston returned from a trip on Saturday last. "■ .._!_: The Pahiatua County Council are at'present putting in a concrete "pipe culvert on the Mangahao Road,?on the way to the railway station, in place of the old wooden culvert, f En"quiries*have been made as to whether the Council are going to widen the bridges across the two creeks, as many people consider them dangerous for I understand the Council intend widening the bridges as soon as funds are available. The proposed A. and P. Society is meeting with good support, but many of the business people complain that if the Show is held at Scarborough, though close to the railway, it will not benefit Pahiatua town tne ,same way 'as if it were held in the borough. The quarterly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce will be held this evening. It is stated that there will be several candidates for the Mayoral chair,
but it is generally considered that the present Mayor (Mr D. Crewe), now that he has decided to contest the Mayoralty, will be returned. An interesting election is being looked forward to. Good entries have been received in sheep at Messrs Ealgety and Co.'s and Abraham and Willaim's, Ltd., ales to-morrow (Tuesday).
