A Mafia gang at Palermo, Sicily, in broad daylight, and in a public square, assassinated an American detective named Petrosini, who was investigating the connection with the "Black Hand" organisation. Petrosini defendjd himself with a revolver. He received many wounds. It is said that hs did more than any man in the United States to bring Italian criminals to justice. The Mafia is a ;iotorious secret society in Sicily, organised for the purpose of promoting smuggling and protecting its members against the police. To it and the "Black Hand," a somewhat similar organisation which flourishes in the United States, have been attributed many murders and other crimes.

SENSATION CAUSED IN NEW YORK. Received March 15, 11.35 p.m. NEW YORK, March 15. Petrosini's murder has caused a sensation in New York, wheie twenty-three "Black Hand" outrages were committed in 1908, including bomb throwing, arson, and assassination. Apparently"a group of blackmailers are using the sign of the "Black Hand" for purposes of their own. The outrages are not considered to be political ones.
