DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.

♦—-■ HEADMASTER'S MONTHLY REPORT. The headmaster of the Masterton District High School (Mr W. H. Jackson) reported to the School Committee last night as follows:—Attendance, roll, Main School 625; average attendance, 576; percentage of attendance 92; side school, 153, 141 and 92; secondary classes, 92, 87, and 95. The attendance for the month has been very good. 1 have no absentee report to present. Two new assistant teachers joined the staff on the Ist inst., Mr Gordon Mcintosh and Miss Ellen Pinhey. Miss Olivfc Dagg, a senior secondary pupil has been appointed a pupil-teacher in the place of Miss Eileen Murray, who has entered the Training College. One ot the female assistant teachers has been absent since the 25th ultimo, through sickness! and has received from the Board further leave of abssnce till the end of the month. On the Bth inst, Inspector Fleming paid a visit of inspection to the classes in the secondary department. During the present year there will be twelve students attending the Victoria College, who have matriculated from this school. Eleven of ! them are receiving a £lO grant from ' the Trust Lands Trust, and one a £4O 1 grant towards the cost of their uni- , versity education. The classes estab--1 lished at the school for tuition in ' swimming and life-saving are doing | splendid* work and remarkable progress is being made. Every scholar above the second standard i,?, this I year, boing given the opportunity to : benfit by this -tuition, and without the slightest co3t to parents. Before ciosing the classes for the present season I have arranged a programme of swimming competitions for boys and also a programme for the girls. The finals in all the events on both programmes will be contested on two separate afternoons next week. I have not applied for the sole use of the baths for these occasions, and no school -charge will be made. The parents and friends of the'competing scholars will therefore be able to witness these interesting competitions on complying with the Borough Council's -regulations re-j garding charge for admission and sex restrictions. There are 231 en-' ries in the competitions for boys and j 126 in those for girls. I have to I acknowledge the Committee's congratulations to the staff of the school on the past year's work,' and the success of .the pupils in the university and scholarship examinations. I desire to thank the Com- i mittee for-the staff and myself for .I its letter of appreciation. I should be glad if the Committee would make arrangements for the winter's supply of firewood. I should like to have it stored'before the wet weather s;ts in. I find dry firewood much moi* economical than wet in addition to other advantages. The Committee commented favourebly oii the satisfactory nature of the report in various .details. The Chairman particularly mentioned the good work being done in swimming classes, Mr Cork endorsing theremarks made by Mr Brown. Mr Chapman suggested that'the Committee should donate prizes for the school swimming, carnival. -He moved that two prizes, one for shimmers of each sex he donated, of the value of a guinea <-acb.
