MASTERTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Masterton School Committee was held last evening. There were present: Messrs R. Brown (in the chair), A. W. Chapman, G. Towr.send, J. Carpenter, H. H. Cork, E. H. Waddirgton and Rev. J. N. Buttle. Mr Chapman reported that he had had a conversation with Mr Candy, the instructor for the drum and fife band at the school, and Mr Candv had the tempoi'ary disbanding of the band on account of the lack of enthusiasm being shown by the boys. If the band wer? reformed later on a new basis he thought it would be in the interests of the band. / In a discussion which ensued members expressed keen regret at the unsatisfactory position of affairs in regard to the band, in view of the expense gone to by the Committee*) Mr Candy's suggestion was unanimously adopted, it being agreed that if the band were reformed later, commencing with third standard pupils, more success was likely to result. Messrs Chapman and Wadding ton were appointed a committee to report at a later meeting, when they considered it advisable to start a fresh band. I Mr Chapman referred to the num- | erous accidents occurring at the school through the use of swings. He thought the Committee should seriously consider the question of having the swings removed, as the children could do very well without them, and they were a constant dread to parents.' Mr Chapman referred to several accidents in particular which had come under his notice. Other members concurred in the view expressed by Mr Chapman, and "'on the motion of the Rev. Buttle, it was decided to have the swings dismantled subject, to the approval of the Headmaster. It was mentioned that some compensation for the 103S of the swings might be provided later in the shape of some other source of amusement. Messrs Brown, Carpenter, and Rev. Buttle were appointed visiting' members for the month.
