UNEMPLOYED IN NEW ZEALAND.
The Secretary for Labour (Mr E. Tregear) has prepared for the Minister of Labour (Hon. A. W. Ihzz) a return showing the [applications for employment made during the w.eek ending February 17th. The return, he states, shows the applicants who have been over five years in the Dominion, and the number ofjassisted immigrants who have called. The position, he goes on to say, seems to be most acute at Auckland and Wellington, where 172 and 272 applicants applied respectively. At Christchurch and Dunedin the numbers, 73 and 87, were [comparatively small. In the smaller centres there was not a very large number of applications, but Greymouth, with 52, and Wanganui, with 38, may be specially mentioned. "Whilst on the subject." Mr Tregear adds, "I may say that duiing the last montn no '. less than 827 applications were received for employment at the Wellington office. lam this very large total may be exceeded this month." The return ofapplicants for the week ending February 17th, shows that a total of 774 applied for work. Of these 400 had been under five years in New Zealand, 374 over five years, and 50 were assisted immigrants. Of the assisted immigrants 37 were farmhands and three were lfsted a3 unskilled; outside these there were 276 unskilled applicants. J
