STACK BUILDING COMPETITION.

JUDGE'S COMMENTS. The judge of the stacK building competition of the Masterton A. and P. Association, Mr D. (Juild, supplies the following brief comments on the entries:The stacks as a whole showed good workmanship. Three were excessively trimmed, and had to be discounted as tending to destroy the outlines necessary for judging. The building of the stack.—The idea of the builders varied in places, such as having no - projection at eaves, to a projection of twelve inches, and also in the slope of the roof, some preferring a straight roof from the eaves; but the majority were convex, and rightly so, as the water descending from the apex increases in volume, so should the curve in roof correspond. The judge preferred a short roof in proportion to the diameter of the body. It is hard work for men pitching u>p sheaves on to a long top, when a shorter one with sheaves properly pitched or hung answers the same purpose, and the shorter one is a test of the better workman or stickbuilder. The first and'second stacks were models in this respect. I was pleased to have the builders of the stacks present while testing five of the number, and in all instances a ladder was there, so that there was no delay and the journey round waa one of much pleasure.
