RIFLE SHOOTING.
THE TRENTHAM MEETING. By Telegraph—Press Association. TRENTHAM. March 9. The riflemen commenced their work this morning to complete the final stages of the Auckland Match, 600 yards; Otago Match, 800 yards; a couple of Teams Matches; and the Rapid firing Match, 600 yards, 10 shots. The first two matches were finished, making four out of the five matches from which the fifty highest aggregates are to be chosen for the Champion Belt. A blue fky, hot sun and a smart breeze characterised the weather conditions, but some feature or other of them did not fit in with the requirements of the competitors, for the shooting was by no means as brilliant as had been the case on the previous four days. At the 600 yards range of the Auckland Match no possibles were registered, and the match was won by James, Napier. Dewar, of Oamaru, Guy, Kaponga, and E. Shaw, Auckland, came next, each with two points short of winner. The tricky breeze made the shooting of some of the crack marksmen "in and out." The same applies to the shooting at the 900 yards range of the Otago Match, which was won by Storkey, Napier, who put up 46 at this range, and a possible at 800 yards. Two possibles were achieved at this range, Clyde, Waikari, and Maingay, Piako, being credited with them. Guy, NeJson, has won the Union Company's Cup with the general aggregate in the Auckland, Wellington and Nelson Matches.
