THE TIMBER INDUSTRY.
A COMMISSION OP INQUIRY. By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, March 9. The Government has appointed the following Commission to investigate matters concerning the timber industry:—Messrs T. Y. Duncan, M.P. (Chairman); F. J. Arnold, M.P.; W. H. P. Barber, Wellington; S. J. Clarke, Auckland; H. G. Ell, M.P.; W. H Field, M.P.; J. A. Hanan, M.P.; W. T. Jennings, M.P.; W. B. Leyland, Auckland; F. Mander, M.P.; W. Morris, Greymouth; J. Stallworthy, M.P. The Commission is to inquire into the following rjatters with respect to New Zealand timber:—(l) Cost of felling; (2) cost of cutting at mill; (3) price when sold by mill to (a) consumer, (b) middleman, (c) retailer; (4) price when sold by middleman to (d) consumer, (e) retailer; (5) areas of Crown land held for milling under the Land Act or State Forests Act, showing the licensees names and acreage held; estimated area of Crown laud still available for sawmilling but not taken, with details regarding the districts and area. With respect to Oregon timber:(7) extent uf importations and effect on local market and industries; (8) its landed cost (showing freigh.. and charges separate from cost price); (9) its price when sold by the importer to (a) consumer, (b) middleman, (c) retailer, and generally any matters which, in the Commissioners' opinion, injuriuuslv affect the timber and timber building industries, or would promote their development, including the necessity or expediency of legislation on the subject. The Commission is to ait at Invercargill, Dunedin, Christchurch, Greymouth, I Wellington, Taihape and Auck land and to report by May 31st.
