PAHIATUA NEWS.

(From Otfr Resident Reporter). Saturday. PAHIATUA COUNTY COUNCIL. Ihe monthly meeting of the Pahiataa County Council was heJd in the Council Chambers on Saturday. There were present Crs T. Hodgins (Chairman), and A. Koss, J. D. Piper, A. Barrell, T. Quirk, H. F. €oom, R. Smith. A letter was received from the Department of Lands and Survey stating that the Department had agreed to buy 3 acres 2 roods 28 perches from Mr T. P. <3irdwood, to give access to Crown Lands subdivided for settlement, Section 123, Block VU., Mangahao. The Health Inspector reported that the general health in the County -was satisfactory. Mr W. Huderson, Hukanui, sent in a claim of £2 15s for damage to his buggy, caused by his horee shying at a heap of stone on the roadside aear Mr J. Avery's property at Konini.—The letter was received. The Stock Inspector sent the Council notice to clear noxious weeds from the reserve at Ngaturi, and the reserve at Girdwood's Roa i. opposite Central Road.—The Engineer was empowered to act in the matter, Mr, George Cox, Hir.emoa, complained of a settler's stock straying on the road. One Councillor- said that he believed that the settler concerned used the road as" a stockyard.—lt was decided to draw the Ranger's attention to the matter.

Mr Ellmers waited on the Council «md asked that the road to lias place be repaired.—The Engineer was instructed to inspecUbe read,, and was given power to have the same >rejpaired if he thought necessary. A motion to spend £5 an connection ■with repairs on Breed's Road was Jost, and it was decided to spend £2 on Mt. Marchant Road to give access to Mr G. H. boss's property. The Engineer, in his report, stated tbaj: he would like to see the Makuri liver in flood at Tylee's ford before giving an estimate of protective work required for the ford. Cr Ross said that the matter of this ford had been continually before ths Council, and two Engineers before Mr Milne had stated tnat to put in groynes was only throwing money into the river. The onlyjway he could see out of the difficulty *as for the people to raise a Joan to build a bridge, the estimated cost of which was £SOO. The Engineer stated that the County by-laws had not yet been drawn up. It was decided that the Council meet on the same day as fixed for the arranging of the Makuri limestone (metalling) contract to discuss and draw up a set of by-laws. The Finance Committee recommended that accounts amounting to £BB4 15s lOd (made up as follows::—General, £504 7s lOd; Riding, £304 0s 3d; Loan, £56 7s 9d) be passed for .payment.

The following balances in connection with the Ridings were reported: —Pukeroiku. cr £315 lis 9d; Mangahao, dr£329 2s 2d; Mangaone, cr £409 2s 4d; Puketoi, dr £Bl3 15s 7d; Makuri, dr £249 lis 5& It was decided to purchase two draught horses for the County teams. PAHIATUA-SCARBOROUGH FOOTPATH. The Engineer laid before the meeting df the Pahiatua County Council on Saturday two plans and two estimates for the Pahiatua-Scarborough footpath. The first plan sat out the work to be done in the most up-to-date style at an estimated cost of £320, and the second plan gave a ten feet width of metal at an estimated cost of £2OO. Messrs Godfrey Taylor and J„ Brechin attended the meeting on behalf of the Scarborough residents in connection with the footpath. Considerable discussion tooK place in the matter, each Councillor being of the opinion that something should be done. The estimates exceeded the sum available, but it was thought that the balance could be arranged, and the Council finally decided that the Chairman and the members of the riding, together with representatives of the settlers interested, should wait on the Borough Council on Monday evening next, with a view to finally arranging the funds for the lowest estimate. It was pointed out that if the work was not started before

March 31st, the Government subsidy would lapse. STOCK MARKET. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co.. Ltd., report on their monthly sale at Pongaroa on Friday- as follows: —Upwards of 4,>000 sheep were sent in, and this number being more than our yards would hold, extra yarding accommodation had to be obtained at Messrs Petersen and Neslson's yards, for which we are greatly indebted. Prices obtained were as follow : Sheep: 2 tooth ewes 12s 4d to 12s 6d, sound breeding ewes 7s 6d to 9s, a&ed ewes 4s to 6s, lambs (woolly) 9s, other lambs 5s 6d, 6s 6d, 7s, small wethers 7s 7d, small 2 tooth ewes 9s, rams 25s to 2£ guineas, cull rams 6s to 10s. Cattle: 3 year steers £3 10s, 2 year steers £2 2s, fat heifers £3, 2 year heifers £2, weaner calves 7s. Mare and foal £6.

BOWLING. The featherholders were again called upon to defend the much coveted "Norton" feathers, they being challenged by Messrs Petherjck, Weston, Mills, J. D. C. Crewe (skip). The contest was a very keen one, Petherick playing a good game. However, the holders proved too good, and the game ended in their favour by 20 to 13.
