CARRINGTON ESTATE STOCK SALE.
Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., report:—A large and representative gathering of ,211 those interested in pastoral pursuits has to be recorded in regard to the Carrington Estate stock sale. The Taratahi Yards, on Thursday and Friday presented quite an animated appearance, and from early morning until late in the evening, on those two days, the usually quiet village of Taratahi was somewhat upset s by the large influx of visitors who attended the sale. The gathering reminded one of the good times that were with us two years ago, when sheep and wool weie selling at abnormal values, and whenever a clearing sale of ary importance was to be held buyers from all parts of the district turneu <•• u. numbers, and endeavomed te» outbid each other for all lots otieieu. The arrangements in. regard to tne Carrington Estate sale left nothi'--r io be desired aiid from start to. fiuisii everything went off without a liiich, KIM on Thursday, when the sheep and cattle were disposed each lot was put through in recoid time, and the sale was ccmplettd end all stdck delivered by 4 p.m. Grca.. praise is due to Mr Macdonald. Mr W. H. Booth's manager, for the exs> cellent way in which, all line- of stock were drafted and. yarded, acd it was not a difficult task for tuc auctioneers to get quii:k and spirite.. bidding for the different lots offered. The sheep a:id ratile came under the hammer in excellent order and condition, arid must satisfactory prices realised for every lot offered to the public. The breeding ewes, especially commanded much attention, and the quality of t K e sheep was in itself an assurance that good prices would be obtained.. The fat and store wethers were also in firstclass order, and had been most carefully drafted; good competition ensued for the different lots submitted. The rattle were iu splendid condition, and showed plenty, of quality, there was hardly a bad coloured animal among the total, of 470 head offered. The prinicpal sales-were as. follows: •—Four-tooth ewes, 17a. 7d; 2-tooth ewes, 15s; 6-tooth ewes,, 16s 7d; 4-year-old ewes, 14s 3d to 15s 6d; f.m. ewes, 12s sd; cull f.m. ewes, 9s 6d; mixed line 2-tooth to f.f.m., not station bred, 13s 2d; fatevves, 10s; 2-tooth wethers,, small, 10s Id to 10s sd; 4-tooth wethers.lis 5d to lis Bd. The large line ot 2,124 prime fat wethers brought 12s lOd. The different lines of rams offered quickly found purchasers, the Southdowns offered were really good sheep, and sold readily at from 4igns to B£gns for two-shear sheep; three-shear Southdowns sold at from Signs to 3| gns. Catt.e sold exceptionally well, and this was not to be wondered at considering the quality and condition. Two-year-old heifers, empty, made £2 13s to £2. 19s; 2-year steers, £2 lis to £3. lis; 3-year steers. £5 2s; fat cows, £4 8s; 24year steers, £4 15s; cows in calf, £4 10s; empty heifers, £3 12s; fat and forward 4-year steers, £6 18s; 4-year store steers, £5 4s. The sale concluded yesterday when 74 draughts, half draughts, hacks and harness horses were offered. The attendance of the public was again large and every horse offered, excepting two, was disposed of under the hammer. Most of the draughs offered were aged, but notwithstanding this very good prices were obtained. A number of good hacks and harness horses came forward, but at times bidding was not too animated for this class of animal. However, as the sale was unreserved, new owners were quickly found for the horses'. Aged draught mares and geldings made from £lO to £2O; superior mare with foal at foot, £SO; 5-year draught mare £3l, hunters £l6 to £22; two and three-year draught geldings and fillies from £l6 r.n £27; useful hacks and harness horses made from £6 to £18; inferior and aged from £3 to £5. A word of praise is due to Mr G. W. Deller for the excellent lunch that he provided on both days of sale; it is always a guarantee that the catering will be well looked after if Mr Deller is in charge of such department.
