JEFFRIES AND JOHNSON- MA>l? MEET. Received March 5, 9 a.m. NEW YORK, March 4.. Ten thousand persons greeted* Jeffrie-*, ex-champion pugilist, in> New York. Jeffries verbally promised to r>eet Johnson, but Johnson only, if he can train to his old form. He is being banqueted every night. Immediately after the- defeat: of Burns by Johnson, big offers were made to Jeffries to induce him to emerge from his retirement, but with no result. Big, strong,, clever, James J. Jeffries is considered' the only man who, lit and well* could recover the championship for the white folk. In 1899 Jeffries beat Fitzsimmons, 11 rcunds. at Coney Island, New York; in the same yearhe beat T. J. Sharkey, 25 rounds, at' Coney Island; in 1902 beat Fitzsimmons at San Francisco, 8 rounds; in 1903, he beat Corbett, 10 rounds, at San Francisco; and in 1904, Jack Munroe, 2 rounds, at San Francieoo.. Jeffries retired in 1904.
