THE HORTICULTURAL SHOW.

After a break of many years a Horticultural Show will be held in Masterton to-morrow. The movement is one that must be cordially appreciated by all and sundry, indeed, no note of dissent could be put forward in opposition to so laudable an object. There is no necessity to dwell upon the causes that, some years ago, resjßed in the elimination of Horticultural Shows in Masterton—they have ceased to exist, and are, we believe, practically forgotten. Incongruous as it may seem, smaller towns in the near vicinity of Masterton have held successful Shows for years past, but in Masterton there has been a complete absence of any ( event of the kind; but the function of to-morrow will be the inauguration of a new era, and we trust that it will be the forerunner of many successful shows each eclipsing the other as the years succeed. For some time past a committee, comprised ot prominent citizens, have been working most assiduously to assure success, and it is now beyond doubt that the laudable efforts of the public-spirited citizens referred to will be crowned with the success that it is their desire to consummate. The energetic efforts of the committee have resulted in widespread competitions being a feature of the Show. Well-known nurserymen are not only competing, but are exhibiting splendid displays. Among those who are exhibiting only may be mentioned Mr J. N. Anderson, Napier, aid Mr T. Horton, Pahiatua and Hastings. Other compstitors and exhibitors are H. Poole, Wellington, B. H. Just, Palme.-ston Njrth, E. Hale. Masterton, and W. R. Cook, Masterton. Competition from ama- \ teurs is anticipated to De exceptionally strong, while the committee have very wisely drawn up a programme which admits of spirited competition, and every competitor should I find a class to suit his particular horticultural hobby. To country people the Show will, no doubt, be as entertaining, or more so, as to townspeople. Fruit grown to perfection will be on exhibition, and wii! indie ite, possibly, to farmers ano orchardists generally, how great a gap exists between their present methods and what is possible under a scientiric system that has perfection as its object. The leading flower growers of the district are supporting the loyally, and the most magnificent collection of beauteous blooms will greet the eye of the visitor. In the vegetable gardening classes there is strong competition, and from every point of view the Show should be a most pronounced success. Afternoon tea wil) be provided at a reasonable cost by a ladies' committee, and town and country will, no doubt, unite in enjoying and furthering the function that has as its object, what is not only a public pleasure, but public utility and unmixed good.
