WAIRARAPA SOUTH COUNTY COUNCIL.

''(From Our Carterton Reporter.) The Wairarapa South County Council met on Saturday last, Cr. W. Perry presiding, and Crs. G. Stevens, T. V. Moore, H. S. Mason, R. JBarrer. R. G. Welch, were also present. Apologies for absence were received from Crs. Court and J. Strang. The Treasurer's statement showed that the receipts for the month were £289 7s Bd. There was a credit balance at the bank of £BIO 15s -3d. Accounts amounting to £438 6s lOd were passed for payment. Mr W, F. G"*ay, Gladstone, wrote asking for repairs to the road leading up to Brooklyn, which he said • was in a very bad state. — It was resolved that the Engineer send the grader over after rain. Mr Jack Johnston wrote asking for some seed to sow on the County property, which had been swept by fire recently.— Resolved that the seed be procured. Emily Stratford, Matarawa, wrote asking how the Council could demand rates from her, seeing the disgraceful state the road was in, it being so bad that had had to employ labour to fill in the ruts. Nothing had been done for the ja t two years-; She expected payment from tie Council lor work she had had done, amounting to £1 10s. Cr Welch said that he had been along the road lately, and considered It very good. It was resolved that the letter be allowed to lie on the table. • Tenders are to be called for 500 yards of meta! on Cemetery Road, to close at next meeting. A culvert is to be put in on the .Admiral Road. A report is to be obtained and presented to the meeting upon the ■ cleaning out of a drain for Mr ■ Seivers. The Clerk to the Mastcrton County Council wrote that at a meeting of that Council on the 9th, it was arranged that the chairman of tbatCouncil, and Cr Moore, should interview the Minister of Roads and Bridges, with the object of having the grant for the bridge freed-from* the necessity of £1 for £1 being provided lo- •• cally to secure it. OVERSEER'S REPORT. Mr A, Johnson, overseer, reported -.as follows: Parkvale Riding. "The grader has raked in the metal "On Nix's Road, East Taratahi and Somerset Road. A small footbridge ; has been placed over the water-race on Gladstone Road. On Park Road ■ two stringers of a bridge were broken by traction engines. They have been repaired. Two wheel sheathing has been put dnwn on all the large culverts on Francis Road. The timber was supplied by Mr Rathbone. As soon as the timber i« obtainable a start • will be made with the britge on Bris--tol Road. Tenders have been called / for 300 cubic yards of metal on Somerset Road. Belvedere Riding. The metal on Brooklyn and Manning's Road has been rak*d in; 220 <:ubic yards of metal has been put out on the Maungaterere Valley Road, and all the stones broken. The cutting leading up to Mr Blake's has been widened and graded at a cost of "375. Hansen's contract on Brooklyn Road is completed. Beyond the Cemetery a long stretch of Chester Road is in a very bad state. A light coat of metal is badly needed before •the winter. Dalefield Riding. The grader has raked in the metal on Waterson's Line, Jexvois Road, Joseph'" Roai, Swamp Road, Waihakeke Road, Taumata Road, arri Te , Para Road. A start has been made with the metalling contract on Ponntahi Road. Thirty loads of metal is tipped by the roadside at Gladstone, ready for Rathbone's engine to take on to the Admiral Road. The formation on the | AdmirHl Road, which was left unfinished last winter, is now completed. The ford way in Bannockburn creek has been filled up, and is now safe lor vehicles to cross. It will be necessary to quarry some metal on the ' Maungaraki Hill to patch a portion of j the road near the water trough, j Weather permitting, Reeves con- j tract should be completed about the ; -end of next week. It would be ad- j visible to send a man to the j Kaiwhata Hill so as to have the i road in good order before the wet' weather sets in. i
