TRADES UNION CONGRESS.
DEPUTATION WAITS ON BRITISH PREMIER. PAYMENT OF PARLIAMENTARY CANDIDATES' EXPENSES. THE UNEMPLOYMENT FUND. LONDON, February 26. The Prime Minister, the Right Hon. H. H. Asquith, told a deputation from the Trades Union Congress that he favours the payment of Parliamentary candidates' expenses, but was undecided as to whether the money should come from local or imperial funds. The unanimity among the working men's representatives which existed a few years ago regarding the payment of members of the House of Commons was not now
so apparent. Mr Asquith said the Government was considering the mutter of the unemployment fund. There was a difficulty with regard to making grants to trade unions; at best, the contributions were used for militant purposes. He refused to grant a minimum wage of 35s a week to Government clerks.
