a VERTEX THE ORIGINAL CELLULAR. EALTHIEST & MO JT COMFORTABLE UNDERCLOTHING FOR SUMMER & WINTER. NOW SHOWING IN MERCERY WINDOW, CHE true Principles on which the manufacture of clothing saould be ised are soon grasped when the funcons of the skin and their immenseimartance are clearly understood, it is y the action of the skin that the body ! enabled to maintain its normal temerature. The body's temperature m ealth is about 08° in all climates, both t rest and during oxercise. The warmth s made by the chemical changes in the ody kept up by the foods and liquids we ake (i.e. the fuel). To maintain the ormal temperature, it is the function of he skin to cbse its pores when the heat uust be kept in, and to open them for ivaporation, or the cooling process, when ,he body is becoming too warm. _ Hence, ,he first and most important points for ionsideration are—1. The clothing must not interfere with the action of the skin; the skin must act freely and naturally, or there is danger to health. 2. To prevent interference with the action of the skin, clothing must be porous, otherwise poisonous matters that should be thrown oif readily by the skin are retained in the body, which, becoming unhealthy, is most liable to insidious diseases. 3. Clothing must be porous also in order that perspiration may escape as vapour, and that it may dry more quickly. It is evident that clothing must be a good non-conductor of heat; if otherwise, the action of the skin will be interfered with by outer conditions of cold and heat. , . Naturally, the first question is: What | is the best non-conductor of heat for clothing? ■ ; The answer is: Air is tbe best nonconductor of heat. It is nearly 100 times a better non-conductor of heat than any fibre. It is evident, therefore that _ the best clothing is that which contains a due amount of AIR in its meshes. The question of fibre, whether wool, cotton, silk, or linen, is of little importance with regard to health compared with the absolute necessity of the presence of air m the interstices of clothing. The clothing to be healthy must enmesh air, and it this principle be carefully carried out, the causes of colds and illness will be very greatly reduced. It is easily washed and does not shrink. It is light and comfortable to wear and does not irritate the most sensitive skin. It is very durable. J. L. MURRAY, " The Quality Draper," Nos. 51, 53, 111 and 113, QUEEN STREET, MASTERION.
