PAHIATUA NEWS.
||(From Our Resident Reporter). Thursday. TENNIS. The following Pahiatua players will journey to Dannevirke to play Dannevirke on Saturday next:—Misses Hughes (4), Bolton (2), Druce and Avery, and Messrs Druce. J. Swainson, Osburne-Lilly, Ulrich, Reeve, Bolton, Collins (2). Games are being played every evening on the local courts for the trophy presented by Mrs Avery. BOWLING. Messrs J. Hughes, Pethenck, Hawkins and Mitchell were the four left in the final for the President's trophy. Hughes beat Mitchell, and now the former plays the winner of the Hawkins-Petherick match. Pahiatua players are anxious as to the result of the Dixon Cup match between Masterton ar.d Palmerston North. Pahiatua intend to challenge the winners. GENEKAL. Petiy pilfering is going on in local backyards, one man losing firewood and a bundle of sacks. A warning has been issued to the offender, and he will be made an example of when caught. The expenses involved in the election of Licensing Committees has always been a source of irritation among County Councils. The election of a Committee in this district costs JEBO or thereabouts. This year an amicable arrangement has been made between contending parties, which, it is hoped, will obviate the necessity for an election, and its attendant expense. Both sides have agreed to supper: the following nominations:—Messrs Hughes, Harris, Harding, Hawkins and Walsh. Should any outsiders nominate, on them must lie the responsibility for conse- j quent election expenses, the defray-| inn of which the local bodies interested are very anxious to avoid. In any case, it matters not who may nominate, the two dominant organisations will support the above ticket, and therefore it is fairly safe to predict that any other candidates will secure but little support. This being so it is hardly likuly that aspirants for the position will risk the loss of the £lO deposit. Nominations will close on the Ist March. The Pahiatua "Ranfurly" stables provided a splendid four-in-horse turnout for the Governor's use in Woodville yesterday. His Excellency's Aide-de-camp was pleased to express the opinion that the turnout was the best that had been provided them for any of their country visits. Mr W. Nayler was on the box and handled his team like a Hyde Park champion Jehu. In the course of his speech at the Woodville Show yesterday His Excellency the Governor said, inter aha: —That it was only by exhibiting and comparing stock at shows that farmers found out very often how "rottenly bad" their stock really was." "Rottenly bad" is distinctly refreshing and certainly practical and descriptive enough for the most democratic farmer in the Dominion. A meeting of the committee of the Pahiatua Racing Club will be held in the Commercial Hotel, on Tuesday, March 2nd, at 8 p.m. A wedding, which is creating considerable interest, will take phce at Mangatainoka next week. The- Pahiatua Gun Club held a * "shoot" at Mr Geo. Oxley's on Wednesday afternoon. Mr G. Gleeson won the competition for Messrs Mitchell and Griffith's gold medal, and having won it threa time 3, it now becomes his own property. For the sweepstake, Messrs W. W. McCardle, W. Cooper and G. Gleeson, tied for firpt place, and in the shoot off Mr McCardle won with Mr Cooper second and Mr Gleeson third. Keen competition should take place for the handsome mounted stag's head donated by Mr J. May and the silver cup presented by Messrs iSarraud and Abraham. Mr Storey is also presenting a trophy for competition. At the concluson of the shoot, the president (Mr Breeds) thanked the donors of trophies for their generous liberality. The Pahiatua Chamber of Com-
merce met in Mr Tosswill's office j last evening, the President (Mr Toss- j will) in the chair. It was decided j that the quarterly meeting be held ! in the second week of March, and it : was resolved to support a resolution . from the Masterton Chamber of Commerce with regard to arranging better train services in connection with the Main Trunk mail service, j
On thj motion of the Chairman, it was decided to notify Mr R. B. Ross, I M.P., and the Press of all meetings of the Council. Messrs Sturton, ' Herbert and Evans, were appointed a Holiday Committee to consult trades- ' men as to holidays. As several . Pahiatua residents have an interest in the Drill Hall it was decided to interview Mr R. B. Ross. M.P., on his next visit to Pahiatua with re- : gard to Drill Hall matters, the Chairman stating that if a stage were erected, the Hall could be used for entertainments, etc. Special reference was made to the excellent work of the popular Secretary (Mr Wes ton), and he was granted a bonus of £2 2s for last year's services. At the District Court, yesterday, before Judge Haselden, an applica- , tion was made by the Official Assignee in the case of F. L. Fulcher (bankrupt) to declare certain payments made by bankrupt to Abraham and Williams, Ltd., within three months of his bankruptcy, as fraudulent and void. A similar application wass made in regard to Thomas Bailey (bankrupt) and A. H. Herbert and Co. After hearing considerable evidence his Honor reserved judgment in both cases. A discharge was granted to A. C. Firth, flaxmiller, and H. Burmeister's discharge was held over until debtor consented to a judgment of £SO.
At the Woodville Show drivers of the placed carts in the tradesmen's turnout were:—F. Wells 1, Ray Barrell 2, G. Wells 3. In the school children's class some excellent work w«s exhibited, and several children from schools outside of Woodville obtained prizes. The children's classes at the Woodville Horticultural Show next week will be well worth inspection as large entries are being received.
Mr B. Tyerman, bookseller and stationer, Woodville, has been appointed agent for the Wairarapa Age, and copies may be obtained from him on arrival of the first morning train from the Wairarapa. Mr F. ti. Moore, who met with a nasty accident on Wednesday while on his motor bicycle, was ahle today, with the help of assistance, to reach his shop and attend to business. It will, however, be quite a week be fore Mr Moore is properly able to attend to his regular duties. I am informed on good authority that Mr D. Crewe, the present Mayor, will again contest the Mayoralty this year. Election matters in connection with the Mayoralty promise to be very interesting.
