MASTERTON LADIES' SWIMMING CLUB.
S XX ND ANNUAL CARNIVAL. The second annual carnival of the . Masterton Lad : es' Swimming Club ] was held in the swimming baths. < Dixon Street, yesterday, ideal wea- < ther being experienced. There was ( an excel! Nt attendance, the sum of £8 12s 6 i being taken at the gates, J apart from the members' tickets. ( Sixteen handsome trophies voluntarily donated by persons interested in £ t'ae club were ccmpeted for, and some j exciting contests were wi'nessed. An outstanding feature of the carnival £ was the number of young girls com- £ psting, only one adult participating (and then at the special request of the Club members). Really clever exhibitions of swimming and diving were given by many of the competitors in the children's diving contest. To Mrs J. W. Blackman, President of the Cbb, must be assignsd a great portion of the credit for the success of the gathering, as she has worked consis en ;ly in its interests ( for many weeks i'ast. The vari>us officials carried out the duties allotted them in a thoroughly sati factory manner. Mrs Norman Bettham and Miss Maude Holmwood acted as jtdges, Miss Burnett as etarter, and M.-s Kendall as number steward. The clerical work was capably undertaken by Miss Hettie Gillespie. Special mention must be made of the excellent afternoon tea suppli d by Mes-Ca-nes E. G. E on, J. Yarr. li. M. G-aham, aid H. 0. Lowe, Vi. Presides of the CI b, assisted by a number of yuung ladies. Mtssrs Ims an! GodJard's orchestra discoursed music during the aft3rnoon, w iic'i was much ai predated by those prasent. At the conclusioi. of the sports, the trophie3 were presented to the various winners by the President.ln her remarks, Mrs Blackman thanked all thoss woo had assisted in making the pa h ring a succs-. The competitiors, she said, wtre beneficial in that they influenced many young girls to learn to swim, which was a very beneficial and desirable exercise. On her motion a hearty vote of thanks was passed to the Borough Council for the free use of the baths. and to Mr John Hunter for the use of the Dominion Hall for meetings.
