CARTERTON.

(From Our Resident Reporter). Wednesday. A letter received by a local resident from Mr and Mrs H. S. Moss, who are on a trip to the Old Country, states that they had had a pleasant voyage to Teneriffe, the place from where the letter was written. The stones on the footpath in Belvedere Street are being picked out, and the path levelled up—a much needed work. Mr Robert Seymour, at one time | proprietor of the Club Hotel, was a visitor to Carterton to-day. The annual picnic of the Waihakeke State School wi)l take place on Friday. MrJ. J. Mead, secretary of the Wairarapa Horticultural and Industrial Society,-was busy canvassing the town to-day for prizes for the Summer Show to be held on Saturday. The Borough Council met last evening, His Worship tlrj Mayor (Mr W. Moore) presiding. The treasurer reported that there was a debit balance in the general account of £536 6s, and on the gas account of £359 15s Id. The gas committee reported that 152,000 feet of gas had been manufactured during the month, 7,100 feet of which had been consumed by the town clock and btreet lamps, j The plans had arrived for the installation of the gas exhausting plant, , and a concrete foundation for the ' same was being prepared. The sani- ' tary inspectur reported one case of infectious disease for the month. Tie ! building inspector reported that durj ing the month buildings and additions ' had been carried out to the extent of £4 DO. The Mayor and Cr. Reid were appointed delegates to the meeting of the South Wairarapa County Council at the water race headwoi-ks to consider alterations and improvements. The action of the Mayor in granting the Fire Brigade permission to cut the water off for half-an-hour on Thursday and Friday evenings for practice purposes was endorsed. The application of T. M. Aplin for drainage connection was granted. The tender of R. Smith (£18) for the erection of a public latrine in brick on -the site chosen by the committee in Holloway Street was accepted. Mr G. A. Fairbrother wrote, forwarding subdivisional plan of property cut up opening off Belvedere Street and asking the Council to name the roads thereon. It was decided that one road retain the name of Taylor Street, and the other with a row of trees down the centre be called Augustus Avenue.
