CARTERTON.

(From Our Resident Reporter). Tuesday. At a mteting of the Council of the local Chamber of Commerce, last evening, Mr B. Scannell was elected chairman. A letter from the Master- , ton Chamber of Commerce re railway I connection with the Main Trunk line j at Woodville was considered. The following resolution, moved by Mr , J. T. M. Hornsby, and seconded by j Mr J.' M. Lighcfoot was carried:— ' "That the Hon. the Minister for Railwaysi.be written to and asked to consider the claims of South Wairarapa (so long delayed) to communication with the western coast of this island; that it be pointed out to the Minister that all that is necessary is the linking up of the system already in force; that the Minister be asked to accelerate the early fast goods train which passes here at 9.15 a.m., so at to connect whh the New Plymouth express at Palmerston North, and that the train which ■leaves Palmerston , North .after the arrival of thi New Plymouth down train should be so timed as to arrive at Masterton about 8.45 p.m.. instead of, as at present, 9.45, when the goods train to Featherston has alreadv passed along; further, mat it; be "pointed out to the Minister, that a promise whs made to consider the whole matter when the Manawatu line was taken over, and especially if the haulage of heavy traffic was arranged so as to supersede the Rimutaka Incline by taking all heavy goods from Eketahuna and .northward by way of the Manawatu line." Copies of the resolution are to be forwarded to the Featherston •and Masterton Chambers of Commerce, Greytown Borough Council, and the Maryborough Town Board. Ht was resolved to inquire from the authorities what towns will be connected when the through telephone line to Wellington is available. The Kaka patrol of the New Zealand Buy Scouts went through their first course of semaphore signalling Jast evening, and "stalked the sentry" ,in the paddock adjoining the drill hall. They also indulged in the game called "free," this being practice in the art of keeping perfectly motionless till the word free is given. The patrol go in to camp with the Carterton Rifle Volunteers for the week-end on Saturday. Improvements have just been effected to >the premises of the Wairarapa Bacon Factory. Mr W. <C. Buchanan, M.P. has donated £•' 2s. and Mr P. Costin M)s 6d to the funds of the local brass band. A crop af malting barley, from the property of Mr S. Feast, Ahiakouka, threihed 70 bushels to the acre. Bro. G. W. Hart presided at a meeting of Totard Lodge, U.A.0.D., last evening, when one member was declared off the sick fund. A sum of £4 was voted "from the benevolent fund towards a brother's special medical expense?. Bm. W. W. Mansfield reported the business done at the bi-annual conference "at Palmerston North, and was accorded a vute of thanks. He also reported

having attended the Grand ..Lodge, meeting as representative of Totara Lodge, but that owing to an oversight in forwarding returns,- this Lodge, with sixteen others, was excluded from deliberations, no-ex?. planation being allowed. At a meeting of the Re'chabite' Lodge, last evening, one member was declared upon. the sick fund. Bro. T. W. Foster gave a resume of the business transacted at the conference at Masterton, and was accorded the Lodge's thanks. Routine business was transacted.
