TURF NOTES.
(By "Zetland.") Masterton trained horses ran exceptionally well at the Castlepoint meeting on Saturday, and accounted for no less than five events out of seven on the card. J. Phillips scored with Golden Butterfly and Matira, A. Watson won two races with Steel Gun, while the representatives from R. Knox's stable, Rune and Over Rate, ran first and second respectively in their engagements, the firstnamed winning the principal event, the Cup. For the Wanganui Cup, to be run early next month, the present favourites are All Red, Bobrikoff', Apa, Blue Ribbon, and Ngapuka; and for I the Flying Handicap ine leading ones j being coupled in doubles are Gold I Crest, Gold Thread, Armlet, Orucinella and Merrivonia. Lochiela is now runnnig in the nomination of Mr Ivan Thomas, who last season raced the Saracen horse Mataari. Humpty Dumpty, the full sister to Merriwai, is now one of H. Fletcher's team at Tauherenikau. Other inmates of the stable are Silken Rein, Purakau, and Erina, the latter being by Lethe —Doreen. After racing at Woodville last week, Lord Soult again showed strong signs of lameness, and is not a probable starter at the Wanganui meeting. The present members of J. Phillips' team are Goiden Butterfly, Matira, Retinue, Preamble and Afterthought. They are all in good trim, and the fittest of them will be seen out at the Masterton meeting. Full Rate has been thrown out of work for a time, his running lately having been somewhat disappointing. Maybe his owner will later on decide to give The Officer gelding a chance to distinguish himself over sticks, and in this department he should show to advantage. White Lie, who will now run in the interests of Messrs J. Gelhor and G. 11. Goodall, strained her shoulder when running at Foxton recently, hence the reason for the Merriwee mare not running at the Woodville meeting. Mr G. Hume has leased Hilarian to Mr W. M. Halley, of Carterton. Merriwai, Needlework, Eurus, Gwendolina, Southern Cross, and several other horses that are to be raced during the winter are now in work.
