CARTERTON NEWS.

(From Our Resident Reporter). Saturday. The Carterton technical classes , will re-commence on Friday evening next. The congregation of the Methodist Church last evening tendered a farewell social to Mr, Mrs and Miss Pepper, on the occasion of their departure for Greymouth. Miss Pepper, who has been organist at the church for some time, and a Sunday school teacher, was the recipient of a silver cake-dish and a silver egg-cruet. Mr and Mrs Pepper were presented with a silver-mounted ink-stand, cutglass cruet, silver sugar-basin, and a silver cream-jug. The Rev. W. J. Elliott made the presentation, and Mr Pepper suitably replied. The metalling of Tyne and Library streets has been completed. The annual meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was very poorly attended. Mr Jas. Brown presided, and the balance-sheet showed a small credit. The chairman, (Mr J. T. M. Hornsby), W. Toomath, J. M. Lightfcot, R. Scannell, W. W. Mansfield, A. W. Kitchen and G. A. Fairbrother, were elected an executive; Mr J. Laurenson appointed secretary, anil Mr H. D. Wallis auditor. The returning officers were accorded a hearty vote of thanks, special mention being made of the services rendered by Mr Jas. Brown a? chairman. The Masterton Chamber wrote asking for the Council's co operation in supporting a resolution dealing with train arrangements. It was resolved to refer the same to the Council, and in the meantime to frame a resolution based on Mr Hornsby's remarks, who considered the matter of getting a through service from Palmerslon to South Wairarapa every night of more importance. On the Bowling Green last evening Messrs Ramsay and Kiddie (19) defeated Messrs McPhee and Hughan (13) in a game of the pairs tournament. On Ash Wednesday there will be service in St. Mark's Church at 9 a.m. and 7.30 p.m.
