MASTERTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
MONTHLY MEETING,
The Masterton School Committee met last evening. There were present —Messrs R. Brown (chairman), J. N. Buttle, A. W. Chapman, C. Perry, E. H. Waddington. and H. H. Cork. The treasurer reported a credit balance of £3B Is 2d. On the motion of Mr Chapman, it was decided to forward a congratulatory letter to the headmaster and teachers of the school on the success of the scholars in the recent University ' and Education Board examinations. Members generally considered that the success of the scholars was remarkable.
It was also decided to forward a letter of appreciation of the suecess of the scholars at the Show in connection with the entries from the school garden plots. The headmaster reported as follows:
Attendance.—Main School, 641 on roll, average attendance 571, percentage 89; Side School, 153 on roll, average attendance 133, percentage 87; Secondary Classes, on roll 92, average attendance 83, percentage 90. School re-opened on the Ist inst. after the summer vacation. At the Main School 43 new . scholars were admitted, and at the Side School 19. From tne Main School 22 children have been transferred to the Lansdowne School, and from the Side School 18. The attendance for the past tortnight has beep very satisfactory. The desks for the new class-room were given their last coat of varnish this week. The room will be raady for occupation next week.
The Trust Lands Trustees, at their last meeting, resolved to undertake the removal of the old Technical School building to a site at the side of the school gardens, for the purpose of establishing a school museum—if the Technical School Managers will make a free gift of the building to the Trust, and if the School Committee will undertake the care of the institution when established. I am authorised to state that the Technical School Managers will very cordially agree to the proposal. I sincerely trust that the School Committee will give its hearty co-operation to the scheme.
The following pupils of this school passed the recent matriculation examination, and els) the solicitors' general knowledge examination : Aileen M. Murray, Ronald Miller, Reginald R. Burridge and Victor Sutton. Three of these pupils will enter Victoria College next month. The following pupils of this school passed the recent junior Civil Service examination, the first four being placed in the credit list:—Olive Sutherland, Grace Waddington, Gladys Cork, Wilfrid Hampton, Eva Dagg, Ctnstance Evans. Harry Heyhoe, Alfred Ibbetson. Albert Dawson and George Miller. Tha following pupils of this school won senior scholarships at the Education Board's recent scholarship examination:— Olive Sutherland, Grac«>. Waddington, Gladys Cork and Wilfrid Hampton. These scholarships are open to pupils attending any College, High School, or District High School in the Wellington Education District, and are tenable at any of the above named institutions, or at a Technical School.
The following pupils of this school won junior scholarships at the Education Board's recent junior scholarship examination:—Berta Scott, Reginald Wilton and Lander Thompson. These scholarships are open to pupils under 14 years of age, and are tenable at the same institutions as senior scholarships.
All the scholarships won are of the value of £4O a year for two years, if the winner is compelled to live away from home, and £5 a year for two years if the winner is not compelled to live away from home.
The Chairman moved that the old technical school building be accepted on the basis stated in the report. The motion was carried unanimously, the Committee being unanimous that the move would be a good one for the school, and ultimately for the whole district. The Education Board wrote notifying the appointment of Mips Aileen Murray to the staff of the school. —The Committee approved of the appointment.
Accounts amounting to £2B 8s 2d were passed for payment. It was decided to apply to the Education Board for copies of the Navy League maps to hang in the schools.
