EXPLOSION A.T A COLLIERY.
ESCAPE CUT OFF
Received February 18, 8.10 a.m. LONDON, February 17. A colliery explosion occurred at the West Stanley Pit, Durham. One hundred and forty-seven persons are entombed. A tongue of flame destroyed the shafting and cut off egress from the pit. The noise of rapping has since been heard, suggesting that some of the men in one of the four seams are still alive.

Of the 147 persons entombed, 37 were rescued. It is feared the remainder have perished. The majority ot the survivors were saved through remaining in a by-way until the gases had cleared away. Many bodies recovered were found to be badly burned and mutilated.
