COST OF PAUPERS.
REPORT BY INSPECTORS. \ Received February 16, 9 a.m. LONDON, February J5. Inspectors of the Local Government Board state that, though the inmates of the asylums for the poor increased during 1908, the indoor cost of the paupera in London has fallen by £50,000 a year, whereof one-half represents the savi;:g in the Poplar Union.
The inspectors comment on the consumption of alcohol in the provinces. One sick ward cost 53s yearly per head. The inspectors agree that the Unemployed Act has produced a bad effect, in the shape of a growing dependence on the public funds instead of individual efforts being made.
