PERSONAL.
The many friends in this district of Mr John Card, proprietor of the Em pire Hotel, Featherston, will regret to hear of his death, which took place on Saturday last. The deceased, who was 75 years of age, was highly respected for his many sterling qualities. A widow and several children among whom is Mr J. W. Card, the well-known solicitor of Featherston, are left to mourn their loss, and the sympathy of a wide circle of friends will be extended to 'the relatives in their bereavement. The funeral will take place at Featherston at 2 p.m. to-morrow (Tuesday).
A very pleasant time, was spent on Saturday eve ring aimng the employees of the railway staff, at the Masterton Railway Station, on the occasion of the departure of Mr B. Kavanagh, Inspects of the Permanent Way, from this district. Mr Kav inagh, who is to take up his duties at Wellington at an early date, has bejn stationed at Masterton for five years, and has made in that time a large lumber of friends, and is held in ereat esteem by the members of the staff. Mr Kavanagh was presented by the staff with a very handsome silver tea and coffee service, with an oak tray, which was also silver mounted and in-, scribed. Mr E. To-nlin, clerk to Inspector Kavanagb, made the presentation, Mr Kavanagh suitaoly responding. Messrs Johnson, Fisher, and Guards Grushy andC. Retter, and Engine-driver Hood contributed songs to the musical programme, and Messrs O'Grady and Henley step-dancing items. Toasts were honoured and a convivial time spent.
