MASTERTON COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Masterton County Council was held yesterday afternoon. There were present— Cr9 W. J. Welch (Chairman), A. Murray, J. Miller, J. Morris, J. Colquhoun, D. W. Foiman, H. 0. Toogood. Cr Moore, of South Wairarapa County, waited upcn the Council in connection with tho proposal to erect a suitable bridge over the Waingawa river at Fernridge, where there was formerly a swing bridge. Mr Moore stated that a new structure wasbadly needed, and a Government giant of £l5O was Hst apart for the purpose on a £ for £ basis. , t His Council was willing to contribute £25, and they desired the Masterton Council to do the .ssme. The bridge desired was Only required for purpose of stockdriving, and it might not cost £IOO to erect sucn a structure. The ford was a very unsuitable one. The Chairman stated that theie were a number of settlers on the Masterton bide of the river who had small strips of land on the other side, .-and had iccasional calls for such a kbr/dee. He though* that £IOO would be hardly sufficient for the class of bridge needed for a span of 12Sft. The Council had previously assisted :tbe settlers i:i this matter.
y Cr Toogood thought that if it was a case of assisting iii a bridge for the purposes of foot traffic, and as an a:dti scho.d children, the Council snuuld assist. He considered it was more a matter for the settlers them- . selves. Aft r a short discussion it was resolved, on the motion of Cr Forman, that the Chairman and a member of the Wairarapa South Council wait upon the Hon. A. W. Hogg to re- ■ quest that a straight-out grant be . made for the work. Mr H. H. Wardell wrote to ask permission to erect a gate across > Stronvar Road. The request was acceded to subject to the usual cor.ditions being complied with. Mr D. K. Mannering, poundkeeper, Alfredton, wrote asking authority to impound stock straying on the roads in tha district. The letter wis held over until next meeting of the Council. Mr J. H. Percy wrote asking permission to take watsr and drainage pipes across the Mangapurpuru Road, subject to the supervision of the Engineer.
The request was granted, subject to the approval of tne Engineer. Mr i. P. Kemble asking that some metalling be done on the road leading to his property at Rangitumau. Mr KemUle offered to contribute toward* the' cost. —Tne request was granted. The MastertoT Town Clerk (Mr W. T. Mansh'ela) wrote forwarding a resolution of :ne rJorough Cjur,cil in reference to the improvement of tne northern bpp.oach, asking that the Borough.Engineer be allowed to confer with the County Engineer in regard to the details of the scheme to be carried out. After a some discussion it was resolved that the Cjj.-cv Engineer prepare the plans tor the work and submit them to the Borough Council for approval.
An application was received from Mr J. Black to purchase a grivel reserve in the East Coast Riding. It was rt&olved, en the moiio-i of C* Toogood, to reply that the Council was not prepared tu sell the tesarve at present. It was decided \o close the Weraiti Road during the progress of the present metalling operations. Cr moved that the Motuwaireka Bridge be painted before the end of March. —Carried. The Clerk waa instructed to procure the etnizes of an clerk. ' Cr Mutray moved that the Engineer cali alttrnative tenders for metalling remaining lengths of the Alfredton-Wrbtr Road. The motion was carried. Cr Forman 'moved that the Engineer be instructed to expend the balance cf the allocation on the Pairau and bop line roads, and on the Lansdowne footpaths. —The motion was earned.
