The marriage of Mr Wiiliam Thomas Sloan, of Wellington, to Miss Mary Callister, was celebrated at the residence of the bride's parents, "Brooklyn," on Thursday afternoon last. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. W. J. Elliott. Mi=s M. Callister (sister) was the bridesmaid, and Mr R. Richmond was best man. Mr and Mrs Sloan will reside in Wellington. Mr H. Fowler, at one time on the staff of the local Post Office, is at present on a visit to this town. Mr James Devery, who has represented the Singer Sewing Machine Company in Carterton and district for the past two years, has received notice of his trai.sfer to Hawera, and lie will leave for his new district on Tuesday next. His successor will come from Levin.
For the December quarter there were seven sittings of the Magistrate's Court here, three of which were before a Magistrate, and four before Justices. There were 32 cases heard, 21 before the Magistrate and 11 before Justices. The aggregate amount sued for was £352 0s lid. The aggregate amount recovered was '£lßs 5s lid. Three applications were heard in Chambers, and three orders other than judgment summonses were made. Plaints entered numbered 37. Three distress warrants and four judgment summonses were issued, and two orders on judgment summonses were made. Forty-six summonses and processes were served within a radius of two miles, and 12 over. Fourteen distress warrants were executed by the bailiff. Civil fees paid in stamps amounted to £29 2s. The following criminal cases were before the Court:— Petty theft of goods, three, two of which were convicted and one discharged; contempt of Court, one, which suffered peremptory imprisonment; disobedience of Court order, two cases, both of which were dismisspd; breaches of the Licensing Act, six, two of which were dismissed, and four fined; failing to provide, one case; failing to send children to school, five cases; breach of tha borough by-laws by riding on footpath, one case, which suffered summary convicti.n and a fine. The total number of persons taken into custody was 21, the charges against five being dismissed, 16 were convicted. Seven also suffered fines, one imprisonment and eight were released under the First Offenders' Probation Act. The amount of criminal fees paid in stamps was £2 10s, fines £5 13s. Three old age pensions were granted, two refused, and six are pending.
