The Canterbury Jockey Club's summer meeting opened to-day in beautiful weather. The attendance, however, was not large, and the fields were not particularly good. The totalisator investments amounted to £4,781. in addition to which the bookmakers fees amounted to £225. Results: —
Trial Stakes, 1 mile.—Valdimar, 7.11, 1; Jessie Lewars, 8.2, 2; Nobel, 7.11, 3. Also started — Helianthes, Cavatura, Ganton. Eagleftone and Vologda. Won veiy easily. Time, lmin 42 l-ssec. Midsummer Handicap, of 250 sove; 1£ miles. —Prim, 8.8, 1; Tikitere, 8.3, 2; Glenculloch, 8.13, 3. Ako started—Probable 9.0, Field Gun 8.13, Grand Slam 8.8, Ellerton 8.1, and Monkey Puzzle 7.2. Monkey , Puzzle and Ellerton made the early running, but were beaten before the straight wa» reached. GlencuHoch led at the top of the straight, but failed to stay out the distance, and Prim won by a length and a half, Tikitere beating Glenculloch by half a head for second place.
