ALLEFED THEFT.

Recently there have been numbers of oomplaints regarding potty ! thefts fr.»m waggons standing in the railway yards, and at the Magistrate's Court to-day three men were ! charged with having - stolen goods from a van on Friday night last. The case was adjourued till Wednesday next. It appears that on Friday night Shunter Lawrence, who before joining the railway service, was a member of the police force, and who on i the night mentioned was in charge of-I the yard, whilst on his rounds had his | suspicions aruused that a closed van ' had been tampered with, and he thereupon hid under it. Presently four engine cleaners appeared on the scene, and proceeded to burst open the van. One of them remained on watch, and w?:)t away some consider • able distance from the van. The others got into the van with the intention apparently of helping them-I selves to sDme of the goods. Law- ' rence emerged from his hiding place, j closed and locked the door of the van, and communicated with the police, who arrested the men. T.e fourth man got away.
