PAHIATUA NEWS.
(From Our Resident 'Exporter). Monday. I am given to understand that in all probability s. representative cricket match will take place on Easter Monday between Akitio and Pahiatua on the local ground. The local Fire Brigade are assiduously practising every morning and evening in view of the forthcoming Demonstration at Auckland. Great enthusiasm was displayed amongst the competitors for the shooting prize (a razor and shavingrequisites) at the American Novelty Parlour on Saturday evening. The winner is still in doubt, as Mr Mannering and Mr W. Palmer tied for first place, and will shoot off this evening. Next Satturday a rolled. gold watch and chain will be the first prize. Pahiatua is already preparing for the annual race meeting on Wednesday and Thursday next, and the local hotelkeepers and boarding-house proprietors are making additional preparations for the convenience of visitors, some of whom have already arrived. We are to be well looked after in the matter of entertainment, Mr Redfern's American Novelty Parlour being open every afternoon and evening, and Mr Be -z Wiil Munn (who is an old Pahiatua boy) and his talented Vaudeville Corcpany have engaged the Theatre far Tuesday and Wednesday evening.. As Mr Munn is well-known in this town, no doubt a large number of local people ■will greet him and his Company's first appearance on Tuesday evening. A splendid sample of "Early Puritan" potatoes was on viesv at the mart on Saturday Jast, seventeen potatoes nearly filling a small candle "box and weighing fourteen pounds, box included. The potatoes were grown by a farmer on the Central Ridge Road, in rich land adjoining the Mangahao river. Several inquiries are being made as to whether military sports are to be held this year as in th* 3 past, each inquirier promising support if they should eventuate. Messrs Mitchell and Griffith will hold a special fruit sale at the mart on Tuesday afternoon. Oae of the proprietors of the North Island Brewery Company inform me that the Company used over 100 tons of bay last year tor packingpurposes. The solitary gar Jen seat in the squire is sadly bJtdng for company. Oo Sunday last the seat was in constant use from morning till evening, and it is to be hoped that ere ling tie main square will be favoured with more seats, from some of our liberal hearted townsmen. All the world over, said a local authority, speaking of the Post Office question, local bodies are put daily at great expense widening the streets of the towns or cities, while in Pahiatua they are endeavouring to make the main street narrower. The work in connection with removing the old school is well in hand.
MAKUKI NOTES. Makari has been visited by a number of tourists during the .last few weeks. His Excellency the Governor has been here for a visit, and while motoring had the misfortune to get stuck fast on the roaflside through pulling off to allow one of Mr H. Vile's wool waggons to paßs. Mr G. Vile, who was driving the team, took some of his horses out and pulled the motor m to the hard road, and the party proceeded on their journey. Fishing parties report having had excellent fishing and obtained good bags, and state the Gorge is now looking at its very best. A fine line of 1,500 wethers was trucked from the Pahiatua railway station this morning by Dalgety and Co., on account of Messrs Sullivan and White, of Kohunui. CARLTON MYSTERIES. At the Olympic Theatre to-night and Wednesday night, the celebrated magicians. Horaee and Madame Carlton, will present their latest and most sensational illusions dircet from London. They are supported by a first class star vaudeville company, which include some of the be3t artists now appearing in Australasia. Amongat them are Charles Clark, Australia's favourite comedian, who will sing the latest
comic songs, Miss Jean Jrvan, ft favourite London contralto, Miss Fan Knolleys, the clever Australian serio-comic singer and dancer, and Mi- Jack Langley, baritone. A special engagement for the Pahiatua season has beer, made of the Zeaia sisters (Birdie an J Ilean) dancers, and it is certain that the people of Pahiatua will welicome Mr Bert Will Munn's Company at. the Olympic Tneatre to-night.
