NEW ZEALAND TOURNAMENT. By Telegraph—Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, January 23. The finals in the Singles Championship were played to-day on the Canterbury green. In the second round •of the section winners Scott (Caledonian) 2l bent Bently (Dunedin) 14, Fraser (United) 22 beat McDougall (Christchurchj 20. Scott got home nicely from Bently. The Caledonian man was playing a great game, and got away with a head. Bently was rather off colour and was not nearly so deadly in his drawing as on the previous day. The game between Fraser and McDougall was an extraordinary one. At the eighth head Fraser was 15 up to 1, the Christ- " church man having only a single to Jiis credit. McDougall made a great and scored so well that in the last head he had tied. An extra head was played, and Fraser got a couple of shots in. In the third round Goldstone (Waimate) 19 beat Scott (Caledonian) 17. In the semi-fin°ls Varcoe (Victoria) 17 beat Fraser (United) 16. McLaren (Dunedin) 18 beat Goldstone '(Waimate) 16. _... JLn the final McLaren (Dunedin) 20 beat Varcoe (Victoria) 13. In this game Varcoe started off with two 2'a, but McLaren netted three at the third head and equalised with a single at the fourth head. On the aiext head Varcoe lay one shot, and -as McLaren failed to draw the Victorian was one up. In the sixth head Varcoe drew right on the jack, and k lay short, but McLaren shifted him with his next howl, and lay one after -a good drawing contest. In this head McLaren lay two points. Varcoe by excellent drawing carried off a fine three in the next head, making the score eight to six in his favour. The Dunedin player equalised matters on the Bth head by some clever play. Varcoe lay short and McLaren playing a little heavy followed through, and displaced Varcoe, gaining two shots. Varcoe wan lying two on the next end, and McLaren failed to alter the position with his last bowl. McLaren got a single on the luth cutting Varcoe | out of a four bv trailing the kitty. On the 11th head the score was ten all, Varcoe sending the Kitty to McLaren, but saving a two on the 12th head. Varcoe added a singie, and McLaren again equalised with a single in the ] 3th, head. Varcoe got a single out of! the next, McLaren snifcing a' second with a drive. In the 15th head, McLaren got a two. His first shot was dumped up by Varcoe, and the secfOid was secured by a fine draw. His t )ird bowl overran the jack, but he was one up on the game. He notched a singie in the next head, and by fine drawing added a three in the following head, which made the score 17 to 12 in his favour. In the 18th head Varcoe got a single, missing a second i in the measure. At this stage Varcoe was four down, and his chance of winning against the experienced ' I -southerner was reduced to a mini- | mum, McLaren practically clinched things by cutting' him out of two shots in the 19th head, and lyirg the shot himself with his third bowl. On the 20th head Varcoe lay a shot with his bowl, but MaLareja with a fine draw got in and beat him for the point. In the head McLaren scored a two, rand thus won the Singles Chairipionsfoiip by 20 to 13. The Inter-Island Match, North v. South, resulted as follows:—JUardie, ■ South Island, .27, beat Thompson, North Island, 16.; Keast, South Island, 20 beat Webb, North Island, 19; Brown, South Island, 19, beat Moult. North Island, 16; Stark, South Island, 21 beat Price. North Island, 20; Barlow, South Island, 16, beat Munro, North Island, i 5; Ballinger, North Isiand, 23, t eat a Dale, South Island. 19; Johi.iton, ▼ South Island, 20, beat Nash, North Island, 18; Bently, South Island, 20, beat Crowley, North Island, 15; Scott, South Island, 21, beat Camp- ■ bell, North Island, 16. Totals—South Island, 173; North Island, 160. On the seventh head the scores were 58 __ to 24 in favour of North, but on the 14th South were 114 to 108. The match was practically a scratch . match, and was by no means repre- IT sentative of the two Islands. II
