Wray Palliser, Secretary of the English Rugby Union, in a letter to the newspapers, protests that the Scottish Union's action was unsportbraanlike in seizing upon a trail excuse to make England the scapegoat for the presumed evasion of amateur rules by the New Zealand governing body. He declares that it is ridiculous t9 term an allowance of three shillings a cTay 3 wage or payment for broken tirhe\- ' The Scottish Rugby Union cancelled the annual fixture with England beeauStJ the English Union sanctioned payments to the "All Blacks" and "the Wallabies" of a guinea a week each, besides expenses. Received January 21, 10.53 a.m. LONDON, January 20. Wigan defeated the Australian Xeague (the professional football team) by two goals and four tries to a goal and two tries. Received January 21, 8.35 a.m. LONDON, January 20. "The Times," summing up the %iur of "the Wallabies," the Australian amateur football team, says that, though inferior to the New Zealand and South African combinations, they have a very good record, and at their best were a fine, if not a great, side.
