PAHIATUA NEWS.
- * (From Our Resident Reporter). Wednesday. PAHIATUA FIRE BRIGADE. A meeting of the Pahiatua Fire brigade was held at the Fire Brigade Station last evening. Captain McAlister presided, and every member of the Brigade was present. Before the business commenced the hydraritmen and pioneers were sent round the town to inspect and test the various fire plugs in view of a large number of people expected on race nights in the tovtn. They reported that two were slightly out of order, and these they had rectified. Correspondence was received from the Auckland Demonstration Committee, asking particulars of the number of firemen from Pahiatua who would be competing at the Demonstration.—lt was decided to send six firemen and one delegate, and to nominate for the followingevents :—Hose, Hydrant and Union, 5 men; Hose and Hydrant. 3 men; Coupling Event, 2 men; and Ladder Race, 1 man. On a ballot being taken tor a delegate to represent ''Pahiatua, Mr S. Wallis was eleccted. Senior Hydrantman • Radford's resignation was accepted with regret, and Assistant-Hydrantman Stokes was elected to fill the vacancy. Fireman White taking the latter's place. It was decided to practise as much as possible in view of the forthcoming Demonstration at Auckland on March 10th, 12th and 13th. . GENERAL. The Fire Brigade are to be congratulated on their forethought in testing the various fire-plugs in the
town. Since the hiyh-pressure supply in this town, nut one building in the Borough has been completely burnt down, which speaks volumes for the efficiency of the Brigade and the good pressure of water obtained. It would be unfair to this district not to mention the splendid quality and condition of the nheep and cattle at the stock sale yesterday, this being the general theme of conversation last evening. A large quantity of the stock purchased goes outside this district to Hawke's JtSay, Palmerston North, and Wairarapa districts. Prospects for the farmers are looking well, and if the blight does not affect the rape and turnip crops, a good year's output should be recorded. Mr R. E. Grinlinton, an old and respected resident of Woodville, died on Tuesday night. He was wellknown, in the Bush district, and formerly owned a large grocery, drapery and furniture business in Woodville. He took a keen interest in municipal affairs. He leaves a large family. The funeral will take place on Friday. . The Pahiatua bowlers are playing every evening, and good games are witnessed. The Feather-holders were challenged by Messrs Hughes, Petherick, Walsh and Mcßratney, to play on Saturday. There was a large attendance at the Cherniavski concert to-night. Summer weather was again in evidence to-day. The usual hours will be observed at the Pahiatua Post Office on Anniversary Day.
