AN AMBULANCE BRIGADE PROJECT.
THE DISTRICT NURSE SCHEME. AN ENTHUSIASTIC PUBLIC MEETING. The borough Council Chambers were filled to overflowing last evening when His Worship the Mayor (Mr P. L. Hollings) presided over a public meeting called to promote the holding of a monster bazaar in aid of the fund about to be opened by the MESterton St. John Ambulance Association for the tngagement for this district of a district and Plunket ' nurse. There was a large proportion of ladies at th' meeting, which was marked by considerable enthusiasm Several aaologies for absence were read. The Mayor said that the objects of I the meeting were pretty well-known ■ to all, namely, to further the worthy i object ahead of the Ambulance I As ociation in the procuring of a district nurse to work among the poor of the district, and be of assistance where possible tn families generally when it was found difficult tu obtain the s uvices of a trained nurse. The mest iDbable means at the disposal of the Association to raise the large amount of funds necessary were the holding of a bazaar, at which they desind the fullest co-operation of the whole of the district. Personally, the speaker was in very hearty sympathy with the project, and doubtless all those present recognised how noble was the ambition of the Association in this important respect. Mr A. J. Parton formally moved that a bazaar be held in the Town and Drill Halls, opening on May (3fch, and concluding on the 12th inst. This date would be one which it was ascertained would suit the convenience of Lady PlunKet. Mr A. Donald seconded the motion which was carried unanimously. Mr Donald, who ia Superintendent of the Men's Division of the Ambulance Brigade, then thanked those I present for the interest they were displaying in the work about to be undertaken. Mr Donald said that since the ambulance brougham had been purchased by public subscription it. had proved a greatly used and greatly appreciated convenience. The meeting then went into preliminary details, and decided upon . the following matters:—Mr W. Gillespie was appointed Secretary, and Mr R. Brown Treasurer; committees set up to discharge the duties attached to arranging stalls entertainments, a general committee, refreshments, raffles, a ladies' committee, executive committee. The local clergy and medical faculty were included in the executive committee, also officials attached to various local public organisations. Miss Gillespie was appointed convenor of the ladies' committee. A suggestion was made that each church provide a stall, but after a lengthy discussion it was thought preferable to allow the executive committee to allot the stalls. Much interest centred in the discussions. The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks to the chair.
