PAHIATUA NEWS.
(From Oar Resident Reporter). Tuesday. BUSH DISTRICTS A. AND P. ASSOCIATION. A committee meeting of the Bush Districts A. and P. Association was held in the Woodville Jockey Club's room last evening. There were present: —Messrs W. H. Nelson (chairman), R. E. Beattie, E. Ruidick, J. S. Nelson, F. Greaves, J. Beagley, E. Harding, F. S. Stace, A. Kirkpatrick, J. Murray and J. H. Escott (secretary). A letter was received from the Department /of Agriculture enclosing particulars and prices of diagrams of horses, cattle and sheep. —The letter was received. The following wrote consenting to act as judges at the forthcoming ShowMr George Hunter, Porangahau, light horses, thoroughbreds and competitions; Mr Shortt, Palmerston, Romney Marsh sheep; Mr Paul Hunter, dogs; Mr J. A. Nash, produce; Mr J. R. Lanauze, horses and ponies; Mr Alexander, spring carthorses. Several side-show proprietors wrote asking for space, which was reserved for them, and Messrs Borthwick and Sons asked for space to be reserved for them for exhibiting canned goods and manures. Mr Arthur Harding-, Ashhurst. •wrote making a donation of £2 2s to the funds of the Association, which was received with thanks. A letter was received from Mr W. J. Sedcole, Pahiatua, asking if his horse was eligible for the Maiden Leaping Competition, as it had won at the Eketahuna Show, ( two years ago. On the motion of Mr Beattie, seconded by Mr Ruddick, it. was decided to inform Mr Sedcole that his
horse was eligible, as the Eketahuna j Show is not a recognisea A. and P. j Association Show.- _ j The question of privileges was j dealt with, and the secretary wps in- < structed to write to the various publicans, caterers and fruit vendors in Dannevirke, Pahiatua, Palmerston North and Woodville, asking them to submit tenders for the various booths. ! It was decided that the music be supplied by the local band on the same conditions as last year. It was resolved to send invitations to the Governor, the Premier, Minister of Labour (Hon. A. W. Hogg), and the chief chemist of the Agricultural Department, to be present at the Show. GENERAL. The Woodville District High School Committee, met in the Schoolhouse, last evening, Mr Burnette occupying the chair. Very little business was laid before the Committee owing to the holiday vacation. Several accounts were passed for payment. Abraham and Williams, Ltd.,. report having had a good sale at their yards on „ Monday, the following prices being obtained Shee p: Twotooths, mixed, 10s 2d to lis 6d; breeding ewes, 9s; lambs, 7s lOd; wether lambs, 9s. Cattle: 15 to 18-month steers, £2 7s 6d to £2 10s; springing heifers, £4 ss; heifers been with bull, £2 7a 6d to £2 16s; weqners, 255; empty cows, £3 ss; fat cows, £3 12s; bulls, £l. The roads at Pongaroa are in very good conJition, and grass is plentiful. About 4,000 fat sheep and lambs have already been sent out of the district. Shearing is not yet completed, owing to the extraordinary unseasonable weather, it being just a month since the bad weather set in. Great interest is being evinced in
j the rifle club, and at present shoot|ing is the main sport, competitions ! \ taking place every Saturday if the \ weather is favourable. \ Messrs Abraham and Williams have sent ?way from the Pahiatua Railway Station the large number of 150 trucks of lambs and fat sheep during the past week. Mr W. Peck, of Waione, is the I successful tenderer for the Govern- ! ment metalling contract on the Towai ' road, being a continuation frcm the ' contract recently let by the Akiti-> ! County Council. The price was £249 13s 3d. I The Pahiatua Brass Band is to play ' at the Pahiatua races. 1 Mr J. H. Redfern arrived in i Pahiatua this morning with a large ! collection of American novelties, inj eluding electric machines, punching i ball and dumbell lifter. shooting gallery, and other penny-in-the-slot machines. He has also a very large phonograph, which is very distinct. A prize will.be given every Saturday in connection with the shouting eom- : petition. Mir Redfern is established in premises formerly occupied by Messrs Barrell and Early, j At the Mart this afternoon Messrs ! Mitchell and Griffith offered the in- , side and outside publican's booth at the forthcoming Pahiatua Races on January 27th and 28th. The former was purchased by Mr P. Debreceny, of the Club Hotel, for £3O, the" outside booth being obtained by Mr DeI breceny for £6 by privato arrange- ! ment. | A start was made early this mornj ing to remove parts of the old school j to the new school site by means of a 1 traction engine. As this is the first building to be removed in this man- ! ' ner ir: this town quite a number of ! ■ people congregated to witness the ' | work. , i A large number of farmers and . buyers from outside districts were I present at the stock sales to-day, several coming from the Wairarapa. 1 | The class of stick offered in the , two sales was highly commented | upon. ' ! A reminder is given of the "Cherniavski" concert in the Olympic Theatre this (Wednesday) evening. The box plan is filling rapidly, and a "bumper house" i 3 anticipated, as people from the country districts have signified their intention of being present. At the social in Scarborough on Wednesday evening next, the music will be supplied by a lady quite new to this district, but who has played for dance 9 in various towns.
