WHAT IT COST LAST YEAR. MELBOURNE, January 16. The total cost to Australia of de fence la3t year, exclusive of the naval subsidy, was £882.000. There were 22,644 men under arms. This was 6,425 less than in 1901, while the cost of administration was greater by £9,542 than in the last-mentioned year.
