Howard Buckley, ot Wellington, won the scholarship of three years' tuition at the Sacred Heart College, Auckland, open to the whole of the Marist Brothers' schools in tne Dominion. Mr J. A Algie has been appointed registrar of births, deaths and marriages at Wakatipu. The following deputies have also been appointed: —Messrs D. G. M'Kibbin, Woodville; W. T. Coad, Waverley; and W. T. Jones, Pukekohe. Mr J. Hoffmann, ot Upper Plain, will celebrate his 84th birthday today. He caine to New Zealand 25 years and has lived since then in Masterton. Mr Hoffmann has nine children living, 50 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren—a total of 88 descendants. Dr. Chanple, ex-M.P. for Tuapeka, and Mrs Chappie, were entertained at a "social'" at Beaumont on Tuesday, when the former was presented with an illuminated address. They were (say-s a Press Association message from Dunedin) also entertained at Alexandra on Friday, when Dr. Chappie was presented with an address, and Mrs Chappie with a gold brooch. Mr James Lindsay, for 30 years headmaster of Ihe Oarnaru North School, .died suddenly the other evening at Moeraki, where he was spending the holidays. The deceased was 62 years ot age. He joined the service of the Otago Education Board in 1870, and before coming to Oarnaru received appointments at the Durpfliii middle, William street and Normal schools. Readers of "White Fang," The "Call of the Wild," and other trenchantly told stories by Mr Jack Lon don, will be interested to leari that ths novelist is about to visit New Zealand. The American writer told a friend recently that he intended to come across to Wellington (from Sydney) in about three weeks' time if hiR health permitted it. Mr London has been rather unwell since he has been in Sydney.
