PAHIATUA NEWS.
(From Our Resident .Reporter). Thursday. A PROSPEROUS COMPANY. Mr Godfrey Taylor, secretary of the Ballance Co-operative Dairy Company, informed me this morning that the sum of £7,300 would be paid out to suppliers of the Company to-morrow (Friday), the 15th inst., for December's milk supply. This is the largest sum that has ever been paid out by the .Company, and shows the rapid increase that is being made in the dairying industry in the Fortymile Over 4,300,000 pounds of milk was delivered at the various factories and creameries of the Company during December, and the average test was 3.66. The large quantity of 3,370 boxes of butter was exported in December, outside of what ■was manufactured for local consumption. It is understood that the question of starting a bacon factory in connection with the factory will be discussed at a meeting to be held later. The Makuri-Pongaroa Dairy Company will pay out about £BOO for December's milk supply on the 20th of this month. The Pahiatua Brass Band are increasing their membership, and under the conductorship of Mr J. Trezise, the younger members are showing a vast improvement in their playing. Several of them will appear in uniform for the first time on the 27th inst., and it is the intention of the
Band to give several opou-air concerts during the summer and autumn months. The Band i.-; purely «'J'{'-sup-porting. Nothing enlivens a town so much as a good brass band, and it is to be hoped that the local citizens will respond liberally should the Band at any time call upon them to subscribe to the funds. The members individually are to be congratulated on their actinn in sticking to the Band so well. I am given to understand on good authority that the Band some two years ago made a good offer to the Borough Council, to hand over all property for a small amount, and a small yearly grant, and the Band are still willing to become a municipal band. When in Woodville the day one of the old members of the Band stated that the Woodville people were trying to start the Woodville Band again. This Band was one of the leading bands in New Zealand a few years back, and were always well to the tore in the hand contests. The wind which was very boisterous yesterday made things very unpleasant at the cricket match on the Recreation Ground, as it bievv recently cut hay all over the field, and caused considerable annoyance. A social will be held in the Scarborough Schcolhouse on Wednesday evening next, January 20th. A large quantity of fruit was disposed of at the "Mart" on Tuesday at prices slightly easier than recently. Another consignment will be submitted for sale on Saturday next. The Pahiatua Amusement Club have over £2O in hand from last year's
sports gathering, and up to the present nothing definite bus been arranged for a meeting this year. An athlete has forwarded his nominations from North of Auckland :n anticipation of a meeting on the 22nd inst. There is no reason why a good meeting should not again be held this year, and it behoves all those taking an interest in athletics to join with the Borough Council for the improvement of the cycling track on the Recreation Ground which at the present is simply a mass of grass and weeds. I understand that a special meeting of the Pahiatua Branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union will he held at Pahiatua on Saturday, January 16th, and several matters of interest will come up for discussion. Mr Garlick, a well-known farmer, has returned from a visit to his brother in Wiltshire, England. Mr Garlick states that there seems to be a great difficulty in securing small farms a'; Home, and 50 to 100 people are after every small tarm available. He considers New Zealand much better for the farmer with a small amount oi capital.
