COUNTY ENGINEER'S REPORT.
The following report Mastcrton County Engineer (Mr H. •^•' , ; Lachhui) was adopted by trie Gutwicu , yesterday: — [ Opa'ki Riding. | Mild Mild Bridge-—Ths adjusting j | of camber in above bridge has been [ , executed, and I will have the paint- i j inv proceeded with during this ■ month. i A portion of the allocation has been , j expended in improving so:ne of the worst turns on Hiwitoro Road. ( Upper Opaki Road—The painting I of Rummer's bridge is practically J completed. ] Te Whiti Riding. j Weraiti Road. Contract No. 155, | 110 chains of metalling, ecc—The j above contract will be taken off the j contractor's hands as soon as the final raking and breaking of stones has J been completed. ! Waingavva Bridge Repairs—lt has been necessary to put in a false cap to support the southern end of the bridge, the cap in the original structure being found defective. The top decking of above bridge is also showing signs of wear, and will need re-decking during the coming year. Rangitumau Riding. Wangaehu Road, Contract No. 145, 91 chains of metalling—The carting on the above work should be comDleted wihtin a fortnight. There is a" good deal of stone breaking necessary to omply with the specification. Contract No. 184, metalling, etc., 40 chains of road—Fair progress is , being made with this contract,. considering the intermittent showery weather experienced in the past three weeks. About half the length of metal has been laid. The heavy metal traffic on this road has considerably worn the main decking on the Wangaehu bridge, rendering it unsafe in places; it has been supplemented with a 2J inch birch deck. Upper Taueru Riding. Te Ore Ore-Bideford Road—Good progress has been made with the metal repairs on above road, four miles of the northern section having been completed to date/ Wainuioru Riding. I Blairlogie-East Coast Road, Contract No. 180, 131 chains of metalling—Fair progress has been made with this work. There is still an unmetalled length of about 12 chains south of the Waihora which I would suggest be let to the contractor at present in that locality—The work was authorised. Weraiti-Fernyhurst Road, Contract No. 181, 148 chains of metalling, etc.—The contractor has been engaged, during the past month, getting machinery on to the ground, opening the quarry, and making the tramline to same from the road. The contractor expects to have the crusher in going order this week, when the carting will be proceeded with. Contract No. 182, 126 chains of metalling—The above contract was only started on the 9th instant. The contractor assures me that he I will make good progress forthwith. I have invited tenders for three j metalling contracts, for surface re--1 pairs, closing for your acceptance at this meeting:—Blairlogie Road, 1 Contract No. 187, delivering 710 cubic yards of metal; MastertonWaimata Road, Contract No. 188, 1,340 cubic yards of metal for re pairs; Brancepeth Road, Contrac No. 189, delivering 910 cubic yards of metal.
Alfredton Riding.' > Alfredton-Weber Road, Contract No. 186, metalling, etc.—Two miles of road (Tiraumea Homestead South). On my visit ot inspection on the 6th instant, the riverbeds (tne source of metal supply) were generally submerged as a result of heavy rain in this locality; a week's dry weather should make conditions for carting favourable. Contract No. 185, delivering 960 cubic yards of metal, was let to S. Connell, who is now preparing to start operations. Mount Baker Road. Contract No. 81, 103 chains of metalling—l inspected this contract on the 6th instant, when about eight cnains ot the ; metal had been laid. The broken ' weather in this locality has much impeded metalling operations. Tawataia Road-Surface repairs have been made on this length; j the Flat Bush, Castle Hill, and Pori Roads have also been repaired j to admit of wheel traffic. j Hinemoa Road, bridge at Bou- j stead's Crossing—The hardwooJ | timber for the trusses is now on I the ground, and the concractor is i engaged preparing the superstruc- j ture. The comphtion of the work should not entail more than a fort- ! night. ! (Accrued Thirds). Waihoki Road, I Contract No. 183, metalling, etc., 145 chains of road—Mr S. Green, the I contractor for the above work, has i offered to execute ten chains of ! metalling with burnt papa to cover ' some of the treacherous parts known | as the Blue Slip on the Tiraumea- ! Alfredton section of the Alfredtonj Weber Road. There is sufficient : accruued thirds to make about three | chains, and 1 suggest that the bali ance be taken from the loan. This would cover a length which is an en- ! tire obstacle to wheel traffic during 1 the white- months, and would be j appreciated by the travelling public. | The offer, £6 per chain, is a very ( reasonable rate for 15J cubic yards to the chain in this locality.—The offer was accepted. The timber for the large culvert at i Waiholu is reported delivered by the t carter.
