MASTERTON COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the Masterton County Council was held yesterday afternoon. There were present—Crs VV. J. Welch (Chairman), D. W. Forman, J. Miller, J. Morris, H. 0. Toogood, J. Colquhoun, C. A. Murray, and R. F. Beetham. It was decided to ask Mr W. Henson to forward in writing the •withdrawal of his objection to the Lansdowne water scheme. A copy was received from Mr J. Blatchford of an application to the Stipendiary Magistrate, at Masterton, to be heard shortly, in which Mr .Blatchford asks for direction in respect of an order from the Council to clear willows from his property by the Kopuaranga stream. The District tioad Engineer wrote to state that the services of an authorised surveyor would be required for widening Upper Fiain .Road. Cr Toogcod rroved that an authorised surveyor be engaged for the purpose. —The motion was carried. The Chairman and the Enigneer were authorised to attend ;to the . c hifting back of a cottage near the lengh to be widened. Tne Clerk reported that there was only a sum of £5 available in thirds for the purposes of improving the • swing bridge over the Waingawa .river, or erecting a new one, in the upper reaches. | in Cnainijan stated that the South Wairarapa County Council had offered to contribute towards the work, and he suggested that a grant be made by the Council to augment ihe amount already available. He moved that £lO be granted towards' the work. The motion v. as carried unanimously. Messrs Jackson Eros, wrote asking permission to erect ' a telephone line : along Gcrcon Road to Mr G. Shaw's i property. On the motion of the Chairman, it was decided to grant the appli- j cation, subject to the approval of the Engineer and to the Telephone | Committee's sanction, if the main \ line were to be used. Mr L. Donald drew attention to the can state of repair of the lower -end of Nursery Road.—On the motion of Cr Morris, it was decided to ask the Ecru ugh Ccuncil to have this -strip pur, into order at once. Mr H. G. Williams wrote'in reference to the requirements of the Council in regard to the road through the Lansdowne Estate, asking for a modification "f such. The Chairman said he and Cr Format; had visited the road, and the speaker was in accord with what Mr VVilliams asked. C.-forman considered the requirements as to the width of the footpaths were rather excessive, a 13leet path bieng wider than the footpath in parts of Queen Street, i After discussion, a resolution was j passed unanimously that the width of the footpaths be reduced to seven feet. ' Mr F. H. Wood, of Tauranga, j wrote making a claim in respect of j his plans prepared for the first | schema submitted for the Opaki- j Lansuowne scheme, and also in re- j spect of advertising.—The letter was referred to the committee for the present scheme for an opinion. On the motion of Cr Beetham, it was decided that the Clerk write to Mr Williams, of Te Parae, and tain the cost of two acres suitable for a roadman's cottage, the site to be selected by the mover. The action of the Engineer and of Cr Forman and the in opening and accepting tenders during the past month, was confirmed. On the moton of Cr Murray, it was decided to instruct the Engine. / to prepare plans and specificatioi ., for a bridge over the Taueru river, on the Tiraumea-Te Nui Road. FINANCE COMMITTEE. The Finance Committee met in the morning. Present—Crs C. Kebbell (in the chair), D. W. Forman, J. Milller, J. Morris, and A. Murray. The Treasurer reported as follows: —Accounts, dr balance, £1,310 13s 4d; L.B. Loan account, cr £794 Os 6d; receipts since Bth December, £596 17s 4d. Accounts amounting to £2,556 Is Od were passed for payment, j A letter f rom the Masterton i Borough Council, asking what sum J the County Council was prepared to contribute towards the up-keep of the Borough Pound, was referred to Crs Welch, Forman, Colquhoun an J Morris. Regarding a letter from Messrs Mawley and Maunsell, asking the Counncil to apply for 10 per cent, on the Wangaehu £1,400 metalling loan it was decided to accede to the request. The Committee dealt with a letter from Mr Henry Laing, asking the Council to take steps to raise and expend a £950 loan for Mangarei ■Road.—On the motion of Cr Miller, it was dceided to apply for the Treasury's approval to such a loan.
