Tht3 following promotions have been made in the Eketahuna Mounted Rifles : Quartermaster - Sergeant Greathead to be acting-Sergeant-Major; Sergt. Bedding to t.2 ActingQuartermaster. - Sergeant; Corporal Potts to be Acting-Sergeant. The Sports Committee met on Sat- i urday night, and decided to hold a sports meeting on Anniversary Day at the Camp, the public to be admitted free and entertained by the Corps. Tne following programme was drawn up: 1. Fours Competition: first prize, Sergeant Rashleigh's trophy; second, ss. 2 Wrestling on Horseback, sections of four; first. 10s; second, ss. ' 3. Tent Pitching, teams of five, no two Palmerston competitors to be in one team; first, 12s 6d, second ss. 4. Tug of War, teams of eight; first, 12s. i^^bsfrM&UßMso 5. Best Trooper; points: mounting, 10; trotting, 10; walking, 10; galloping, 10; dismounting, 10; stand, ing at attention, 10; dress, 10; horse and gear non to count; first, Quartermaster-Sergeant Greathead's trophy; second, ss. 6. Novelty Race; first, Sergeant Hill's trophy; second, ss. 7. Alarm; first, Sergaant M. Bedding's trophy; second, ss. 8. Buckiumping (open); first man to ride one minute bare back; first prize, ss. 9. OLstacle Race; first, trophy; second, ss. 10. Pillow Fight on rail; first prize, ss. The first event will start at 10 a.m. sharp. GENERAL. The Treasury have provisionally approved of a loan of £6OO for metalling a portion of the Kopikopiko road as applied for by the County Council, The Department of Agriculture have notified the Farmers' Union that they will arrange an exhibit for the forthcomng Show. The County Council at a meeting on Saturday last decided, on the mo- , tion of the Chairman, to forward a Jetter to the Hon. A. W. Hogg congratulating him on his appointment as a Minister of the Crown. The date for enforcing the ten per cent, penalty on the County rates, 1908-1909, was extended by the County Council on Saturday last to February 22nd. The Chamber ot Commerce will meet next Wednesday at 8 p.m. to discuss important business. A thoroughly representative and large deputation waited on Mr E. Page on Monday to request that he should offer himself as a candidate for the Mayoral chair at the elections in April next. Mr A. H. Herbert introduced the deputation, and stated their wishes. Messrs F. C. Tunor, J. J. and F. Wise also spoke on behalf of the deputation. Mr Page thanked the deputation for I the honour y and stated that he would I be pleased to accede to their wishes." j One thousand and eighty-five passengers were booked from tha Eketahuna railway station during the Christmas and New Year holidays The appointment of Mr A. W. Hogg to Ministerial rank has been received with marked approval from , all sections cf the community. There seems a possibility that the Eketahuna Poultry Show will not be held this year, through lack of interest of the members. The exports from the Eketahuna station for three months, ending January 7th, included i 4,870 sheep, 354 pigs, 3,752 bales of wool, 168 trucks firewood, 1,320,000 feet timber, and 261 tons of butter and cheese.
