SUGGESTED CONFERENCE.
QUESTION OF WITHDRAWAL OF PICKETS. SYDNEY, January 9. The directors of the Proprietory mine have agreed to the suggestion of the President of the Arbitration Court for a conference, with the proviso that before it is he'd the pickets must be withdrawn from the mine air! from the works at Port Pirie. A preliminary conference is being held this forenoon to discuss the question of the withdrawal of pickets. SCENE OP WILD EXCITEMENT.
SERIOUS RIOT. ' TOM MANN ARRESTLD. NUMBER OF OTHER ARRESTS MADE. Received January 10, 4.30 p.m. SYDNEY, .January 10. A siene of wild excitement occurred when a trolley laden with provisions was beir.g tafcen to the Proprietary Mine under strong police escort. The crowd present hooted, and stones were thrown at the mounted police who, as soon as the trolley had been taken to the mine, turned and menaced the crowd, most of whom took to their heels and ran. Meanwhile the foot police reenforced the mounted police, and arrested several of the most violent of the crowd, who were taken to the station with the utmost difficulty. Later in the afternoon Tom Mann, with fourteen others, among whom were the officials of the
Union, were arrested. Mann, with the Socialist flag, and accompanied by a large crowd, headed by a band, marched to the Proprietary property. A serious riot followed, but the police were masters of the situation. Altogether thirty persons were arrested. A couple of police were slightly injured. PROCESSION AND DEMONSTRATION. AN ABORTIVE CONFERENCE. Received January 11, 1.15 a.m. SYDNEY, January 10. A big procession and demonstration was held at Broken Hill to-day. The speakers warmly denounced yesterday's arrests. The proceedings wart orderly. Prior to yesterday's trouble, the men's representatives rret the Proprietary manager and discussed the suggestion to withdraw pickets preparatory to a conference, with a view to submitting the trouble to arbitration. The men declined to withdraw the pickets unless the police were withdrawn. The meeting proved abtrtive.
