FURTHER RESCUES. PEOPLE CALMER. Received January 7, 11.30 p.m. ROME, January 7. Ten persons were rescued at Messina on Tuesday. Several business firms have recovered securities and moneys from the ruins. The public services are improving, and the people are calmer. THE RELIEF FUND. Received January 7, 9.20 a.m. BRISBANE, January 7. The State Government has cabled £I,UOO to the earthquake relief fund. NEW ZEALAND'S CONTRIBUTION. By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, January 7. New Zealand's contribution of £5,000 to the relief fund in connection with the Italian earthquake has been acknowledged in the following terms, by the Italian Government, in a cable to the High Comuiissioner:—"ln the name of the Italian Government and the nation, I convey our hearty thanks to the Government of New Zealand for their prompt sympathy in the calamity of Italy, and for their conspicuous bounty on behalf of the victims of the disaster. GIOLILTI (President of the Council of Ministers), Rome."
FEDERAL GRANT. Received January 8, 12.20 a.m. MELBOURNE, January 7. The Federal Government has granted £IO,OOO to the Italian earthquake fund. Received January 8, 12.50 a.m. LONDON, January 7. The Mansion House Fund has reached £65,000. The American fund now totals £500,000, including £BO,OOO irom New York. The citizens of Tokio have subscribed £B,OOO.
