Eighty-four horses have been entered for the Newmarket Handicap, fifty-one for the Australian Cup, and twenty-six for the Champion Stakes. The New Zealand horse Signor is in the two last-named races. It is stated that there is a likelihood of Mr Bidwill sending a strong team of horses over to Sydney ( for the Spring meetings?. The team will i probably consist of Gravitation, Tribulation and Expansion. TURF NOTES. (By "Zetland"). The weights for the Wellington meeting, which will open on the 20th inst., now form one of the principal subjects for discussion among the sporting public. The handicapper (Mr J. H. Pollock) has witnessed the racing at most of the meetings in the Wellington province recently, and has succeeded .in compiling adjustments that should be followed by numerous and satisfactory acceptances. In the Trentham Welter Osiris, who ran second to "Eclogue at Awapuni, and won two races at Tauhereniiaiu, is top weight with 9.9. He has, in my opinion, his full share of weight. Those that read as well in for the mile race are Flingot 9.2, Aorargi 9.0, and Master Douglas 8.11. The Anniversary Handicap list includes some good performers, and among those that will be considered well in are Ikon 10.4, Swimming Belt 9.8 and Merrie Zealand 8.6. High-class sprinters are well represented in the Electric Handicap of 5 furlongs. Naumai 9.2, Armlet 8.11, Flitaway 7.10, and Gipsy Belle 7.5, can skip over the distance bril-
liantly, and at their weights should be among the contestants on the day. The principal event, the Wellington Cup, of 1,000 sovs, should bring out one of the best fields seen out this season. With such fine performers as Bobrikoff, All Red, Zimmerman, Gold Crest, California, Master Delaval, Downfall, Husbandman, langimoana, and Sir Frisco, together with last year's winner, Moloch, and a number of first-class handicap horses engaged in this event will attract one of the biggest crowds yet seen at Trentham. Among those well treated are Husbandman 8.6, winner of the Canterbury and Great northern Derbies, and St. Andrew's Handicap at Feilding, California 8.12, Downfall 8.7, Artillerie 7.10, Swimming Belt 7.1 and Stratagem 7.0. The Telegraph Handicap, of 6 furlongs, will be contested bj many of the most brilliant horses in the Dominion, and with such as Gold Crest, Penates, Master Soult, Cambrian, Armlet, Tumut and Gipsy Belle, backers will have a difficult task set them to select the winner. Very satisfactory nominations have been received for the Pahiatua meeting. Class is especially well represented, and first rate racing should be witnessed. The racing track is in splendid order, and the officials of the Club are working well to ensure the success of the fixture.
