The hearing of the evidence in the "Takapuna shooting case, which ■occurred on Christmas Eve, occupied za. great portion of to-day at the Police •Court It will be remembered that a :farmer named Nicholas Casey, on the night in question, -.vent to the .house of W- E. Sped;, a neighbour, ,and called him out. Thore followed the firing of a gun, anl the voluntary of Casey, who was charged with attempted n.urder. The evidence showed that Casey ?had for some time baen annoyed by the visits of Speck to his house. Rightly or wronp.ly, Arming the ■ opinion that he (Speck) was a married man, Casey considered I Speck's attentions to accused's sixteen year old daughter were undesirable. Casey and others deposed that the former repeatedly warned Speck not to come to accused's place, and that no notice had been taken of these warnings Speck denied that sur.h warnings had been given, but Mr C. C. Kettle, S.M., clearly intimated that he disbelieved him. Casey's defence was that he had merely nreu tne gun to frighten Speck. In the end the charge was, by consent of the Magistrate, reduced to one of common assault, to which Casey pleaded guilty. He was convicted of the lesser offence and dis- • charged.
