PAHIATUA NEWS.

(From Our Resident Reporter). Tuesday. PAINFUL ACCIDENT. A young man, named William Christiansen, employed at Baucke and oo.'s carriage works, met with B painful accident to-day. While adjusting the belt on the grindstone lais apron caught the shaft. Christiansen with great presence of mind hang by his hands and legs to the piles of the building. The belting tore every stitch of clothes from his body, but he managed to get out. He crawled into the main shop and iainted. Mr Baucke speedily eot assistance, 3»nd Christiansen was conveyed to the Hospital, where it was found that his body was badly bruised about the loins. Messrs Abraham and Williams, Ltd., report at their , sale at Mangaliao road yards as follows:—Owing to the rough weather the :la3t two days no sheep came forward, but there was a fair yarding ot" cattle, prices showing a slight advance on previous prices. We quote: —3 year steers £4 9s, 2-year steers £3 5s to £3 12s 6d, 18-month steers *2 12s €d, 18-month heifers running with bull 355, fat cows £5. At the Mart, Wakeman street, Messrs Mitchell and Griffith offered a large quantity of Frimley cased fruit. Prices were slightly easier. They quote as follows:—Peaches 4s 6d, 5s and 6s per case, plums 4s to 6s 6d, currants 3£d to fid per lb, gooseberries 2d per lb. A further consignment will be offered on Saturday next.

It is reported that the Ballance Co-operative Dairy Company intend starting a bacon factory- at Scarborough. The secretary of the Pahiatua Cricket Club received word by today's mail that a team of cricketers from the WoodvilJe Club would journey to Pahiatua on Wednesday, January 13th, to play a match against the local Club. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Company will hold a stock sale at Pongarpa on Friday next. A large quantity of bush has been felled in the Kakoriki district at the back of Hukanui this season. The owners do not intend to burn the bush until about the end of March, so as to allow all the Scotch thistles to seed and ripen and so be burnt in the fire. The Deputy Official Assignee (Mr J. D. Wilson) informs me that there were eight bankruptcies in Pahiatua during the year ending December 31st, 1908, two on creditors' petitions, and the remaining six on debtors' petitions. lVr H. Thomas, bootmaker, has assigned his estate to his creditors. Mr G. Cross, formerly in partnership with Mr J. W. Sturton, of this town, and who has been for a trip to the Old Country, was on a visit to this town the other day. He is looking well and hearty after his trip. Mr H. H. Godfrey, the. contractor for removing parts of the old school, is making good progress with the Work. For the first time in Pahiatua, the building will be removed on a trolley drawn by a traction engine. A party of men used to such work will corns from Napier, to assist Mr Godfrey. Reports from Mangaramarama state that several paddocks of bay belonging to various owners' are rotting, the prolonged wet weather not allowing the hay to be harvested. All root crops, however, are thriving, and

good results are expected. Mr S. Girdwood, proprietor of the Commercial and W Ranfurly stables, has gone for a well-earned holiday to Auckland, after an exceedingly busy Christmas season. Mr Girdwood was formerly a well-known resident of Masterton.

Captain Copp and Lieutenant Shearman, of the local Salvation Army, have received notice that they are to be transferred, but their future destinations are not yet known. A valuable sheep dog belonging to a local resident was run over and killed by a motor car this morning in front of the Commercial Hotel.
