EXCITING SCENES. WOMEN AND CHILDREN RESCUED IN WET BLANKETS. Received January 5, 9.30 a.m. SYDNEY, January 5. Bush fires are sweeping the country re rind Yass. Many settlers are burned out. Women and children were rescued ingwet blankets. Others took refuge in the river. Dairying districts on the South Coast, and in Singleton, Dungog, Bathurst. Wagga and other parts of the State, are suffering severely. There have been numerous destructive outbreaks in the township of Bomaderry, near Nowra. The Grenfell district is surrounded by fire?, and round Gundagai 50,000 acre 3 of grass has been destroyed. The fires are still raging unchecked. HEAVY DAMAGE AT YASS. A TOWNSHIP RINGED BY FIRES. Received January 5, 9.0 a.m. SYDNEY, January 5. The damage by fires at Yass is estimated at over £IOO,OOO. Helped by a strong wind, the flrames travelled at the rate of fifteen miles an hour.

The township of Nowra was ringed by fires, and it was only by great efforts of the fire brigade, assisted by hundreds of townsfolk, that the place was saved.
