PAHIATUA NEWS.

* (From Our Resident Reporter). £ Monday. IMPROVEMENTS AT KONINI BUTTER FACTORY. Probably the adding of the Simplex No. 9 combined churn and butter-worker to the Konini butter factory (Ballance No. 2) in place of one of the box churns, is one of the best things the directors have done since the company was formed. This churn, which was put in some two months ago on trial, has accomplished more than was expected of it, and the directors are so pleased with the results that they anticipate putting another one in next season. The combined churn and worker is shaped like a barrel, stands on cast-iron "blocks, and churns thj cream into butter in the same manner as in the ordinary box churn. The butter is then washed thoroughly, and the water is allowed to drain off. A large cover is taken off one end, and the butter-worker is then inserted. The salt required is placed on a large tray attached to the worker, and the machinery is then set slowly In motion, the butter being salted as it goes through t.ia rolbra. When the butter is sufficients salted the belt is taken wheel, and again allowed to drain. Being again set in motion the butter it well worked till it is ready fr» be run out on a trolley to the receiving truck ready for bulk packing or printing into single pounds. Mr J. Moore (first assistant buttermaker), who has charge of this churn, stated that the patent was a great labour-saving apparatus, would churn and work l,ooolbs at once, and considerably lightened the work.

Going over to Mr Stone, the head j "butter-maker, I found that gentleman busy putting the precious article through a new printing machine, another new addition, which turns out about 700 pounds per hour, the old process only doing bstween 300 and4oolbs. The butter boxes are made at the factory in a workshop at the rear of the main building, and two of Mr D, P. Davidson's patent skim-milk weighing machines are used for weighing out the skim-milk to suppliers. Mr D.. Kelly, the manager, informed me that the directors were doing all in their power for the factory workers and the'suppliers. The Konini factory is right up-to-date.
